The fifth movie of the popular pirate movie franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean” made a leap forward on its release date as a result of Disney’s decision to release “Star Wars: Episode 8” on December 15 next year.
So from a July 7, 2017 playdate on cinemas, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will now open on worldwide theaters on May 26, 2017, which happens to be the Memorial Day.
For almost 40 years, Memorial Day was the domain of the “Star Wars” franchise, playing host to the first six movies in the series, notes Slash Film.
When the seventh movie of the series “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” broke numerous box-office records with its December release, Disney has decided to allow the franchise to jump ship to Christmas.
But Disney would not just let other production companies to take over the Memorial Day, so it decided to hand the release date to another movie franchise that could really use such a sweet release date.
A return to form
Of all the four movies of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” was an excellent film and Johnny Depp’s performance in it was a ton of fun.
When “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” was shown in 2006, the film was a little less fun and the actor’s performance was a little less fine.
Come 2007’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” the movie was already a total mess. It also did not help the franchise one bit when “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” shown in 2011, became a complete nightmare.
Despite the drop in quality of the franchise for every sequel, all the three film sequels still made money at the box-office for Disney.
According to movie critics, the franchise has obviously seen better days and a fresh blood in the Director’s chair maybe just what the doctor ordered for the film series.
With directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg now calling the shots on “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” it looks like the franchise is set to return to form.
Last for the franchise?
There have been recent reports stating that “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” may be the last ever film for the franchise.
According to speculations, the decision to end the franchise was because of Johnny Depp’s several exploits during the filming early last year in Australia.
Depp endured a hand surgery during the filming for “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” and his hand injury has prolonged the delay of the filming for the franchise’s fifth installment, notes Movie News Guide.
In a recent interview, Johnny Depp was quoted as saying that he has high hopes for “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” and if it is going to be the last one, he feels that they owe it to the audience who went out and saw all the films of the franchise for so many times.
Depp said that the production people and the stars of the film have already completed filming and he promises viewers that they will end the franchise on a high note.
Meanwhile, a cast member of the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” Kaya Scodelario, has just married her boyfriend, Benjamin Walker.
The 23-year-old British actress will take on the role of Carina Smyth in the fifth installment of the popular Disney Pirate movie.
She has married her 33-year-old fiancé, who recently appeared in the movie “In the Heart of the Sea,” starring Chris Hemsworth, during the recent Christmas holiday. They tied the knot after just over a year of dating.
The “Maze Runner” actress recently took to Instagram to announce the marriage and share a photo of her wedding cake topper, miniature figures of a man and a woman dressed for a wedding, along with a French pet bulldog.
