When “Rick and Morty” first came out, it seemed like a goofy parody of “Back to the Future”, exaggerating the features of its main characters for the sake of comedy. Yet, as the show progressed, it became clear that it was much, much more than that. Beneath the seemingly simplistic and humorous surface lies a very complex plot full of emotional developments and lots of drama, and the first season of the show featured a moment which some described as one of the most emotional moments in TV, hands down.
And now, with season 2 underway, it looks like the writers have decided to double down on the tearful moments. The season started off on a strong enough note and carried that through the second episode, but the third episode was where the show really got to shine with a touching, heartfelt story about Rick and a former love of his.
We rarely get to see Rick emotional about anything, let alone love, but he ended the episode completely devastated and acted in a way we’ve never seen him before. It’s clear that this episode’s events touched him on a deep level, and he may need some time to heal from that. On the other hand, Rick is the kind of character who could easily turn around and disregard all problems he’s been having in an instant, and some fans suspect that this is exactly what’s going to happen in the next episode.
Beth and Jerry also got a closer look at Rick’s experiments, uncovering an alien that he’s been holding captive and deciding to set it free. However, the alien ends up berating them for the poor emotional state of their marriage before taking off.
Various interesting topics were touched upon in this episode, from hive-minds to deep political issues like racism, and it’s clear that the writers don’t plan on putting any kinds of brakes to the levels of drama that they feature in their stories. If anything, we expect them to make things even more serious over the next few episodes.
The show has made quite the drastic departure from its first few episodes, and it’s starting to dig into a really deep, complex area where the writers have a lot of potential for creating an amazing storyline. Something that fans have been hopeful for is a storyline that spans over several episodes instead of continuing to run a weekly story, but we have no idea what the writers of “Rick and Morty” have planned for the upcoming episodes.
Another aspect that has been working in favor of “Rick and Morty” is the very active engagement that the show has with its fans on social media. Facebook, in particular, is regularly updated with new posts from the official account for the series, and fans have even been commending the administrator for the page, claiming that they’re doing a fantastic job and sharing various screenshots of their more amusing posts.
At the same time, the show’s numerous cultural references have been drawing in fans from all sides, people who’re interested in different areas of television and cinema, but all united under their love for science fiction and a good, deep plot. And judging by what we’ve seen so far, we can only expect the show to get even better in its future episodes, however long it’s kept on the screen. Which, right now, looks like it might be a pretty long time.
