Motorola was not planning to roll out the Android 5.1 Lollipop on its 2014 flagship smartphone, the Motorola Droid Turbo, but due to insistent demand from a good number of users, US carrier Verizon Wireless decided to do it on its own.
In June, Verizon hosted the Android 5.1 Lollipop simulator on its website to give Motorola Droid Turbo users and owners a preview of the features of the firmware update that they could expect on their handset.
But the simulator is not an app that can be downloaded and installed on the Motorola Droid Turbo. It is merely an interactive guide that walked them through things like downloading apps and adding widgets to the home screen, using Google Now and Google Maps, and browsing the web in Google Chrome.
Subsequently, Verizon rolled out the Android 5.1 Lollipop on the Motorola Droid Turbo over-the-air beginning on July 1 following the successful soak test of the firmware update made days before.
Even though the Motorola Droid Turbo comes with flagship specifications, the Verizon-issued handsets were running on the Android 4.4 KitKat, details the International Business Times.
Leapfrogging the OS update
The firmware update has leapfrogged Google’s mobile OS version on the device to Android 5.1 Lollipop, skipping updates like the Android 5.0 Lollipop and the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
The Android 5.1 Lollipop brings the material design user interface, alerts on the lock screen, priorities, recent apps, battery saver mode, app pinning, flashlight, Android ART runtime, and more on the Motorola Droid Turbo.
However, the Android 5.1 Lollipop released by Verizon on the Motorola Droid Turbo came with plenty of bugs and issues that users have been up in arms about it. Apart from a number of bugs, some of the major issues that the Android 5.1 Lollipop brought to the Motorola Droid Turbo included battery problems, MMS functionality, uncontrollable brightness of the device, among a few more.
In fact, there were even complaints from Motorola Droid Turbo users that some of the bugs that came with the Android 5.1 Lollipop actually caused overheating of the device, notes Yibada.
Addressing the issue with another update
Having heard enough complaints from unsatisfied users of Motorola Droid Turbo who took on the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, Verizon Wireless decided to address the issue by planning to release another OTA update to resolve the bugs and issues that plagued the 2014 flagship smartphone of Motorola.
The American carrier has announced that it will release an OTA update to address the reported battery problems and overheating issue on the Motorola Droid Turbo as a result of the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. Verizon advised users that while waiting for the new OTA update, they can simply do a factory reset of the device.
For the MMS functionality problem, Verizon promises to push the OTA update to fix the problem within the next two weeks.
As for the problem on the uncontrollable brightness of the smartphone, the American carrier assured users an OTA update to be rolled out soon. But while waiting for the update, users are advised to perform a factory reset on the device to resolve the issue.
There have been previous reports saying that Android 5.1 Lollipop will no longer be happening on the Motorola Droid Turbo but instead the handset will jump straight to the upcoming Android M operating system which Google would be releasing in the third quarter of this year or just a few months down the road.
However, these are merely speculations at this time since Motorola has yet to make a formal statement or announcement regarding the Motorola Droid Turbo.
As it is the American tech company is currently rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the unlocked versions of its Moto X 2013 in the US, Brazil, and Canada.
Apart from the usual bug fixes, the Android 5.1 Lollipop was supposed to bring stability improvements and performance tweaks on last year’s Motorola flagship smartphone.

my 5.1 was working jsut fine. Then I did the update and my phones battery percentage is way off. It will shut off and say no battery when it says it at 40%. I wiped cache(took forever) and still nothing. I think I will have to factory reset now. I hate Verizon/ moto has been very disappointing in what was supposed to be as close to stock android other than the nexus
That’s nice but I have a Moto MAXX that’s still under contract. Talk about being left out.
Update 23.11.39 trashes my turbo battery use. Only getting roughly 8 hours vs a day and a half out before battery dies. Great work Google and Verizion. Update the update and fix your junk.
Yea um… Like I factory reset my phone… Still have lolipoop tho…. Like wtf
Lost calendar info with my medical history, doctors appointments, everything important. Not even in my back up. I usually got anywhere from 35 to 45 battery life bcuz I don’t utube, Facebook, font know how to Twitter or Instagram. I now hate this phone and want to go back to KitKat. Had no problems, but they say sorry can’t get your important calendar info and 6 hours a day on a full charge will be fixed in a couple of weeks. Well it hasn’t and its been over a month. Technician helped and did a reset. Store worked with a technician to no avail. I want a new Droid Turbo with KitKat on it. You can have your lollipop. It sucks. My son denied it and a it changed on its own and messed his phone up. I have always been happy with Verizon and my droids to now. If they don’t fix soon or give me another phone or find my calendar info I am switching to another company.
I have the exact same problem after the update. The calendar entries are safely stored on the Google calendar accessed with my PC, but all entries older than 1 year before the date of the update are missing on the phone calendar app. I was planning on calling Verizon, but wanted to find out if anyone has already found a solution for this annoying problem.
Thanks.
