The critically-acclaimed British period drama TV series “Downton Abbey” is slated to air its sixth and final season on PBS later in the year but show creator Julian Fellowes believes that it would not be the last for the characters of the successful TV show.
Season 6 of “Downton Abbey” is currently being filmed in the UK and it is one of the most anticipated finales on TV. It is expected to debut in UK television later in the year, but American audiences will have to wait until next year until they can finally watch the last season, details the Latin Post.
He disclosed that aside from entertaining notions of making a film version of “Downton Abbey,” there are suggestions or proposals to make a stage play or a musical version of the series after it ends on the small screen. There was even a speculation that a ballet could also be made out of the TV series.
Fellowes confirmed that Season 6 of “Downton Abbey” will definitely be the show’s last but he is not sure really if fans have seen the last of the “Downton Abbey” characters. He obviously refuses to disclose other details lest he pre-empts some future spin-offs of the TV series.
Tying loose ends
The show creator also revealed that the central theme for the upcoming Season 6 of “Downton Abbey” is all about resolution.
He said that the final season will tie all the loose ends so viewers should expect that most of the storylines and subplots on the TV series during the past seasons will finally have their concluding stories, notes the Vine Report.
Fellowes, however, said that not everything has to be tied up, adding that there are main themes that needed to be closed. He said that the idea is for the fans to feel contented after watching the final episode of Season 6 and not feeling cheated at all.
It is common that when a TV series or a movie ends, there are still questions that were left unanswered, making viewers and fans feeling ripped off. That would not happen with the Season 6 of “Downton Abbey” because he does not want that, Fellowes assured.
But he likewise hinted that the endings on each of the characters of the series may either be happy or unhappy, depending on their respective stories.
Meant for five seasons only
The showrunner also revealed that during the planning for “Downton Abbey” almost six years ago, he originally thought that the show was only good for five seasons.
However, when they finished filming Season 5, Fellowes realized that he did not have enough time to close every main theme in the series and that is why the need for Season 6.
“Downton Abbey” as a series, focused on how the characters adapt to a changing world beginning in 1912 to show how life was for English aristocrats during and after the war.
Fellowes was also asked recently if he has plans of taking the show at the time of the Nazi regime during the 1930s.
The creator said that he has seriously studied and thoroughly explored the part of history that is being thread by “Downton Abbey,” and also believes that he is not the right person to write anything about the Nazi regime. It was previously reported a few months back that “Downton Abbey” will have its wrap in the year 1925, which is a good five years or so before the advent of the Nazi regime.
The main ingredient to the consistency and the seamless story flow of “Downton Abbey” is its one and only writer right from the very beginning during its first season all the way to its final and upcoming Season 6.
