Subaru is giving buyers of its 2016 WRX STI performance sedan a choice of whether to go big or small in terms of trunk spoiler design with no additional cost at all.
Buyers can opt for the big wing spoiler and have the large signature on the back that the WRX STI variant has been known for, or they can prefer to get the new low profile trunk spoiler, notes Torque News.
The big signature wing of the Subaru WRX STI model is functional because it serves a very specific purpose. It keeps the rear wheels firmly planted on the ground when the sedan goes on high speeds. The faster the sedan goes, the more downforce it provides in the rear like the flap in an airplane as it touches down the runway and helps in slowing it down.
Some users think however that the big spoiler looks hideous and is often compared to a clothesline.
Possessing the big wing on the Subaru WRX STI also makes owners of the performance sedan a target for local law enforcers. Without the wing, it is easier for them to go undetected by cops as the STI would really look like a standard all-wheel drive Subaru sedan.
It has been proven time and again by many users that the big wing spoiler on the Subaru WRX STI variant attracts cop attention because it also contributes in increasing the speed of the car and thus easily gets caught in speed traps.
No five-door hatchback model
Despite the clamor of Subaru car owners in the US, the Japanese carmaker will not be coming up with the five-door hatchback model for its upcoming 2016 WRX and WRX STI editions when the sports sedans finally rolls out to the American motoring retail markets soon.
It seems like the decision of the Japanese carmaker has something to do with production schedules and timetable.
As the 2016 Subaru WRX and WRX STI editions will be manufactured at the company’s plant in Japan, the carmaker would be hardpressed to meet the production demands for the Forester, the Outback, the XV Crosstrek, and the Levorg if it will still produce the hatchback model of its WRX STI sports sedan.
Accordingly, the decision to drop the hatchback is meant to add space on the production line for their other hot-selling vehicle lineups all over the world.
But there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for the hatchback variant of the 2016 Subaru WRX STI as the carmaker is already expanding production at its Indiana plant in the US.
However, it will still come on stream in 2016 and despite the Indiana manufacturing plant, Subaru will still find it difficult to keep up with the very strong demand of their all-wheel-drive vehicles. That’s in addition to the fact that Subaru plant in Indiana will also start its production of the new seven-seater SUV for the American market.
