If you were lucky enough to check out the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas recently you might have noticed a handful of cars that were being shown off to attendees. One of those car companies known as Elio Motors has a car that is coming to the market next year and reportedly will offer more than 80 mpg once you get it moving down the street. Shortly after the show, there was speculation as to what kind of engine the 2-person car had that offers such great fuel economy.
The car is more of a large tricycle with the one wheel in the back and this week the company finally showed off images that detail the type of engine that goes inside the new car. The engine was designed by one of the top notch engine builders in the industry, even though the company is not a household name that might sound familiar to you. IAV has reportedly supplied engines for Chrysler, Volkswagen and BMW. The company also consulted on the build of the 250+ MPH Bugatti Veyron that comes with a 16-cyclinder engine and more than 1,000 horsepower to play with.
At first there was a lot of Americans that were holding back because they have been down this road before with similar cars that are going to get you around with less fuel. Elio Motors is really taking the car industry by storm and those that were reluctant to praise the company have finally turned positive and are coming around.
Paul Elio has a good plan and the entrepreneur inside has come out with the design and building of the Elio Motors tricycle/car hybrid. The car is reportedly going to hit the market next year after some delays of cost the company some time. When it does it will be very, very affordable with a price tag that reads just $6,800. Experts are praising Elio Motors for being of the first companies in more than 60 years to build an engine from the ground up.
The engine that everyone was hoping to learn more about a few weeks ago has been revealed and next month you will get to see the first one get started. The 0.9 liter, 3-cylinder will be started up on the 6th day of February during a special event that only investors, suppliers and media members will be able to attend. There are more than 30,000 pre-orders, according to sources and they are eagerly waiting for the chance to drive one. Components that were built just for Elio Motors by IAV include the block, heads, front cover, CAM cover, oil pan, connecting rods, bearings and water pump just to name a few of the major ones.
