Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are one of the hottest new celebrity couples in Hollywood, but are they about to head down the aisle? Gossip blog HollywoodLife recently reported that the loved-up pair were keen on taking the next step in their whirlwind romance and planned to tie the knot – less than six months after going public.
It looks like the 24-year-old’s relationship with Justin Bieber is definitely over, as Gomez is said to be convinced she’s met her “soulmate” in the Hills singer and is keen on getting married as early as October this year.
The source claimed: “She’s told pals that they’re planning to exchange vows in August once he finishes his Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour. She knows [he] is her soul mate. And doesn’t want to spend years waiting to get married.”
The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – might not be so keen though. He recently opened up about the topic of marriage and admitted it wasn’t on his agenda.
Confessing he actually found the the thought of marriage “scary”, he told GQ Magazine’s February issue: “I feel like I’m the kind of guy that would have kids before getting married.”
While there has been no confirmation of an engagement, there’s no denying things are getting serious. Selena was introduced to the 26-year-old’s family during a weekend break to Toronoto, OK!Magazine reported.
The couple jetted to the Canadian city in between dates on his world tour, where the star introduced his new girlfriend to his mother and grandmother and was said to be “thrilled” she was finally meeting the other women in his life.
Lucky for Selena, the insider claimed, she got the seal of approval from Abel’s family who thought the beauty was “suprisingly down-to-earth and very friendly.” The cute couple enjoyed a romantic date at Ripley’s Aquarium during the trip to the Canadian city and were spotted enjoying dinner at Japanese restaurant Blowfish.
The smitten pair shocked everyone when they were spotted kissing in December, just a few weeks after The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – ended his relationship with supermodel and sister of Gomez’s pal Gigi, Bella Hadid.
Proving it was more than just a fling, a romantic trip to Italy soon followed where the besotted couple were seen looking head-over-heels as they strolled around the city of Florence.
Taking in some culture, they were spotted cuddling on a visit to the Accademia Gallery Museum, which houses Michelangelo’s famous David statue and dined out at the Santo Spirito Square before heading to Venice.
The couple might look head-over-heels now, but according to insiders neither were looking for a relationship when they first got close last year while working on a track together. Selena had recently completed a stint in rehab to deal with anxiety and depression issues and Abel was dealing with the end of his 18-month romance with Bella.
“Selena was focusing on getting herself back together and Abel was just getting out of a relationsip, plus putting out his new album,” a source told E!News at the time.
“Abel and Bella [Hadid] were on and off towards the end of their relationship, so getting into something brand new was not what Abel was looking for.”
A romance didn’t come as a surprise so some though, as the Candian singer had reportedly been “taken” with Gomez after sharing a stage with her at the 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where they both performed.
He even went on to reference her in his lyrics to track ‘Party Monster’, where he referenced the singer while describing his ideal woman.
It wasn’t easy for ex, Bella, to witness though.
The 20-year-old told Teen Vogue in March that she still found the split “hard” to deal with: “It was my first breakup – or second, next to the horse – and so public.”
“As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it’s always in your heart, and you always feels it very heavily.”
She added: “It’ll be hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to pull through.”
Before hooking-up with the Starboy singer, Gomez was in a high profile six-year on-off relationship with Justin Bieber.
After going public in 2010, the couple initially split in 2012 but couldn’t keep away from each other.
Their tumultous romance saw them split and reunite several times over the years and while they both spoke about how much they loved each other, it seems the teen idols couldn’t make it work.
Justin, who was accused of cheating on his famous girlfriend on multiple ocassions, is believed to be the subject of Selena’s heartbreaking ballad ‘The Heart Wants What It Wants’ in which she laments a painful breakup and was released soon after one of their many splits in September 2015.
Speaking to W magazine’s March issue last year Selena hinted the romance had run its course. She said: “I’m so exhausted. I honestly am so done. I care about his health and well-being. But I can’t do it anymore.”
While his ex might have moved on, it seems Bieber isn’t extatic that she’s now dating someone new.
When asked in January if he was a Weeknd fan, Bieber told TMZ: “Hello no, that s***’s whack.”
