Derek Zoolander is back again. After 12 years since the release of Ben Stiller’s comedy regarding the ‘ridiculously good looking’ male model, it has recently been declared that Penelope Cruz has also signed up for Zoolander 2. The original 2001 movie is currently rated as a complete cult comedy classic. Has Ben Stiller and company left it out too long for a sequel now?
There are many reasons as to why Zoolander 2 should turn out to be a great movie. While hosting two music award ceremonies in the late 90s, Ben Stiller manufactured the Zoolander character for his two short films. The character was well received due to which Ben Stiller expanded it from ‘shallow, dumb, vacuous…beautiful self-absorbed simpleton’ Derek into a complete full-length film in 2001.
The film was not a huge hit, mainly due to the sad atmosphere following the attacks of September 11. However, the comedic reputation of the film grew over the years with the possible expectation of a sequel never far away. The stupidity featured in Zoolander along with his vanity and the numerous identical looks (Blue Steel, Magnum) and his incomprehensible inability to turn left turned this movie into a highly rich comedy potential franchise. Not being able to turn left is a serious flaw for any catwalk model’s career. It gave us quite a few laughs.
However, it has been 13 years since the release of the first Zoolander movie. The record of comedy movie franchises hung out to dry for too long isn’t good at all. Ben Stiller’s ideas regarding Zoolander 2 must have been sparked after the considerable success of Dumb and Dumber 2 in the U.S.
The latter takes place after a complete 20 years since the original movie. In the meantime, get ready for some laughs as Zoolander was a very silly film. It had a lot of silly but well-delivered jokes, for example, “What is this? A center for ANTS!?”. If Zoolander 2 introduces jokes with such hilarious content, the audience is bound to love it.
When Will Ferrell took up the villainous role of Jacobim Mugatu in 2001, he was majorly unknown to the British Audiences. He was the one responsible for recruiting the silly Derek into a weird plot to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Ferrell is highly popular star on his own and will most likely feature in the upcoming sequel. Presently, it’s not clear whether Owen Wilson, a favorite co-star of Ben Stiller will return as Zoolander’s rival Hansel in the upcoming movie.
