Zendaya Calls Giuliana Rancic Ignorant for Saying Her Dreadlocks Smell of Patchouli Oil

“KC Undercover” star Zendaya called “Fashion Police” host Giuliana Rancic as ignorant following the uncalled for remarks of Rancic on the dreadlocks showcased by Zendaya during the Oscars on February 22.

During the February 23 episode of “Fashion Police,” Rancic evaluated the look that Zendaya brought to the Oscars and said that she feels that the “KC Undercover” star smells like patchouli oil or weed.

The statement was more than enough to rile up the 18-year-old singer-actress and she did not let it slip without a mouthful of her own against Rancic, notes Fox News.

Zendaya, who is Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman in real-life, called Rancic’s statements as ignorant slurs and a sign of pure disrespect to her. She retaliated using her Instagram account, where she made a lengthy post a few minutes after Rancic made the remarks during the “Fashion Police” show.

Funny or disrespectful

In her Instagram post, Zendaya said that there is a fine line between being funny and disrespectful. She said that to say that an 18-year-old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or weed is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive.

She says that she does not normally respond to negative comments or things but there are certain remarks that cannot go unchecked.

Zendaya then enumerated nearly all her family members and friends sporting dreadlocks as well as several prominent people that also carry the same do. She made mention of the Ava DuVernay, Ledisi, Terry McMillan, Vincent Brown, Heather Andrea Williams, as well as several men, women, and children sporting the same locs and none of them smell like marijuana.

The “KC Undercover” star went to say that there is already a harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair.

She explained that she wore her hair in locs on the Oscars red carpet to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that their hair is good enough. She went on to say that locs are a symbol of strength and beauty similar to a lion’s mane.

Zendaya ended her post by saying that some people, alluding of course to Rancic, should listen to India Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair,” and contemplate a little before opening their mouth so quickly to judge others.

Apologetic

It was a short-lived word war, if ever there was one as Zendaya’s post was seconded by many more posts on Twitter, slamming Rancic for her uncalled for remarks.

Rancic eventually took to Twitter to clarify her remarks she made on the show by saying that it was not racially motivated at all.

The “Fashion Police” host also apologized to Zendaya by tweeting that she was sorry if her remarks have offended Zendaya and some others. She averred that she was just referring to a Bohemian chic look but her comments had nothing to do with race and never would.
