Director Bryan Singer of the upcoming film “X-Men: Apocalypse” has just confirmed another mutant character in the movie that is currently shooting in Montreal, Canada.
In his latest tease regarding the “X-Men: Apocalypse,” Singer released a simple behind-the-scene photo on his Instagram account on May 25 showing him directing a scene for the film. It was not so much about the image he shared but actually the caption that went with the photo.
In the caption, the director described the image as shooting Caliban’s place of business in “X-Men: Apocalypse” which confirms that the mutant character from the Marvel Comics will join the movie.
Based on his character attributes in the Marvel Comics, Caliban would likely share an important connection to the film’s titular villain Apocalypse, cites Screenrant.
Caliban has mutant-locator powers similar to Professor X’s Cerebro device in the past X-Men movies, which serves the same function. As Director Singer has not made any other announcement regarding the role of Caliban in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” it is likely that he might be taken in by Apocalypse as his cohort to help him locate mutants.
Caliban and the Morlocks
Whenever the mutant Caliban is mentioned, his name is always associated with the Morlocks, which are mutants who live in hiding, forming an underground community.
The Morlocks first appeared in “X-Men: The Last Stand” where their leader Callisto, played by Dania Ramirez, also had the mutant-locating powers of Caliban.
In the Marvel Comics, Caliban’s strange looks and his mutant-locating ability helped Callisto formed the Morlocks for others like them.
But in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” he will be more than a help to Callisto and the Morlocks as he will likely serve Apocalypse in exchange for his personal vendetta against anti-mutant groups who have killed other Morlocks. However, until Director Singer confirms this information, it remains only a speculation for now.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is due to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
Concluding film
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is the concluding third film in a trilogy that includes the “X-Men: First Class” shown in 2011 and the “X-Men: Days of the Future Past” released in 2014.
Just like its two predecessors, “X-Men: Apocalypse” is touted to become a big blockbuster considering the already huge and still growing fan-base of the series.
From the business standpoint, a producer would surely not let a very successful franchise go quietly into the night just like that. That is the reason why Fox is almost moving heaven and earth to make sure that it gets to retain most, if not all, of the series’ main characters.
In February, Director Singer also announced the inclusion of Smit-McPhee in “X-Men: Apocalypse” as Nightcrawler. McPhee’s entry was announced after the Director also posted that there will be three additions to the cast including Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops.
Turner, Shipp and Sheridan will be playing the younger versions of the hero mutants previously played in early X-Men movies by Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and James Marsden, respectively.
