The latest X-Men movie won’t be coming until next year, but rumors are already circling that a follow-up film is on its way.
The internet was abuzz when a report from Le Journal de Montreal came out saying that the team behind the X-Men movies is set to return to Montreal, Canada to prepare to shoot another X-Men movie slated for a 2018 release.
The news came with a lot of sense and in the realm of possibility. Further reports claim that Bryan Singer would be returning to direct the 2018 film.
However, Collider confirms that the recent reports about another X-Men movie are absolutely false, at least for now.
The website reports that no plans have been made to create a follow-up movie to “X-Men: Apocalypse” by 2018. With that being said, no filming plans in Montreal by 2017 have been sealed yet and Singer hasn’t signed on to direct the rumored sequel.
The team is still in post-production on “X-Men: Apocalypse” and their focus is still on the upcoming movie. They are also focused on the reception of the fans towards the upcoming film, although it is a possibility that they get to talk about where things go from there for the X-Men characters.
Meanwhile, the team is set to return to Montreal by next year to film additional scenes for the movie to feature Hugh Jackman, International Business Times reports.
Jackman is scheduled to start filming from January to late March next year. He will be reprising his role as the fan-favorite X-Men character, Wolverine.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” will hit theaters on May 27, 2016, and will see the return of Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, respectively.
Set in the 1983 timeline, the upcoming superhero film will see the eponymous villain, Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac. Apocalypse is the first ever mutant and is on a mission to destroy civilization through the help of his horsemen.
The Telegraph reports that the film will also see Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique take on a new leadership role in the X-Men team.
The film was originally set as a finale to the second X-Men trilogy that includes “X-Men: First Class” and “X-Men: Days of the Future Past.” But Singer described the upcoming film as a potential rebirth of younger and new character mutants.
“X-Men: First Class” was released in 2011, while its sequel, “X-Men: Days of the Future Past” was released in 2014 and featured the original X-Men characters in their younger versions, in 1962 and 1973, respectively.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” will see the return of original X-Men characters in their younger version. “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner will play the younger version of Jean Grey, a role Famke Janssen notably played in the first three X-Men movies.
Tye Sheridan will portray the younger Cyclops while Alexandra Shipp will play a younger Storm. The teenage mutant who can control the weather is hinted to be one of Apocalypse’s horsemen.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” also stars Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Josh Helman, Ben Hardy, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lana Candor, and Olivia Munn.
With Singer’s comment that the film would be a potential rebirth of the franchise, rumors that more X-Men movies are already lined up have surfaced.
Further fueling this is the fact that Lawrence, Fassbender, McAvoy, and Hoult’s contracts are now up for renegotiation. The contract of the four lead stars are for three X-Men movies, but Fassbender and McAvoy have been vocal on reprising their roles for more films.
“The Hunger Games” actress Lawrence, on the other hand, has stated that “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be her last X-Men movie although she is open to possibilities.
Hoult’s Beast has been a significant character and the actor stated in interviews that if Beast needs to return on future films, he will gladly do so.
