While doctors in the US have successfully inserted the world’s smallest pacemaker, the doctors in UK have successfully implanted the first four lead pacemaker. Traditional pacemakers have three leads that are connected to the heart with the help of blood vessels.
Medical research proved the use of the fourth lead would improve the benefits for patients with certain kinds of heart rhythms. The operation for implanting the new pacemaker was spearheaded by Dr. Paul Foley and Dr. Badrinath Chandrasekaran along with a team of doctors from the Wiltshire Cardiac Center.
While Dr. Chandrasekaran has been working with complex devices since 2011, this kind of procedure was performed for the first time in the UK. According to Swindon Advertiser, Dr. Chandrasekaran said that it was an honor for his team to pioneer the first four lead pacemaker implant and he is proud that such cutting-edge treatment is being spearheaded in the country.
While the patient was feeling good a while after the operation, the doctors will keep a close watch on him for the next few months to make sure that there is no complication. The team of doctors will also ensure that the pacemaker delivers on all the benefits in the subsequent years.
