It’s not rare that the phrase “Half-Life 3 confirmed” pops up around the Internet, either as a joke, or as a serious post based on yet another rumor. The next installment in the “Half-Life” series has been under a lot of scrutiny since the very beginning of its development, something driven by the iconic status of the original game. It’s been more than 10 years since “Half-Life 2” came out – why is the company taking so long to release the game’s sequel, and are they actually going to do it right after so long?
The development of the game hasn’t been entirely secret, as small pieces of news have still managed to surface through the years. Most of the time, the information coming from the studio has been vague, as Valve are traditionally very tight-lipped about what’s going on behind the scenes. One of the most notable mentions of the game has been related to the upcoming “Source Engine 2”, another product currently in development by Valve. The new game is reportedly going to be running on that engine, and is in fact planned to be a major showcase for it.
Valve’s internal structure seems to be getting in the way of progress, according to reports by people from the company. One of the interesting things about Valve is that they work unlike no other company in the software field – there are no bosses, no layers of management, no job titles – everyone is on the same level as everyone else, and developers are free to contribute to tasks outside of their primary work scope. For example, artists with programming skills can lend a hand with coding, sound engineers can do software testing, and so on.
And while this structure has allowed the company to take a very fluid approach to their development, producing numerous hit titles and striking solid success with each of their releases, it is this organization exactly that could be getting in the way of properly developing “Half-Life 3”. The company maintains a relatively small workforce of around 150 employees, and if the main talents keep juggling between projects, it’s likely that “Half-Life 3” won’t receive the full attention it deserves.
And indeed, there has been a lot of progress on Valve’s other fronts, such as “Team Fortress 2”, “Dota 2” and “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive”, which could indicate that the company is focusing on those projects at the moment. The creator of the original Counter-Strike, Minh Le, claimed to have seen artwork for “Half-Life 3” during his time working at Valve, although he couldn’t point out any specific details about the game.
