The American psychological thriller drama TV series “Wayward Pines” has yet to be renewed by Fox for a third season but there are already rumors that the network would do so in the next few weeks or months.
Despite the not-so-good ratings of “Wayward Pines” during its sophomore season that aired this year compared to its premiere season last year, the showrunners left a major cliffhanger and a compelling reason at that for the network to renew the show for Season 3.
That’s in addition to the fact that “Wayward Pines” is actually a TV adaptation of Blake Crouch’s trilogy novel of the same title.
Dana Walden, CEO of Fox, admitted that while the show did leave her and the network a compelling reason for a possible Season 3 renewal, she still wants to look at the multi-platform numbers of Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” to see how big the show audience was.
She also assured fans that the network and the producers of “Wayward Pines” are definitely talking about the show’s possible renewal at the moment.
After the runaway success of the first season of “Wayward Pines” last year, Blake Crouch and producer M. Night Shyamalan worked together to come up with an extended mythology and a three-season story arc, reports the Ecumenical News.
Mankind’s time on Earth is up
If and when Fox gives Season 3 of “Wayward Pines” the green light, it is likely to be the last for the TV series.
It shall also highlight the humankind finally reaching their time on Earth and is about to be made extinct by the Abbies or the aberrations.
It was Blake Crouch who hinted of the possible storyline for “Wayward Pines” Season 3 when he said in a recent interview that the TV series is actually about mankind and the idea that everyone’s time on Earth is not infinite.
It can be recalled that Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” ended with the humans on the losing side in their battle against the Abbies. Forced into a corner, the humans, with the help of CJ Mitchum, played by Djimon Hounsou, decided to go back into cryostasis to wait for a more hopeful era sometime in the future.
It is highly possible that there will be a short supply already of humans in “Wayward Pines” Season 3 because the Abbies have already taken over the world, cites the Parent Herald.
Crouch explained that “Wayward Pines” Season 3 shall focus on exploring the human nature confronted by the threat of extinction of the species.
Exploring the possibility of co-existence
In Season 2 of “Wayward Pines,” the clash between the humans and the Abbies was the focal point of the show.
The battle to extinction remains unsettled during the Season 2 finale, which is why previous reports also have it that the upcoming Season 3 of “Wayward Pines” shall focus and explore the co-existence between the humans and the Abbies.
Instead of focusing on killing each other, Season 3 shall focus on the possible compromise between humans and the Abbies as well as the exploration of human behavior amid extinction.
In order for the show to do it, there will be a one thousand years of time jump from the Season 2 finale to Season 3 but details remain scarce at the moment.
Fans and critics are also wondering how the co-existence between the humans and the Abbies one thousand years later would happen when back in Season 2, they were wiping each other out from the face of the Earth.
Reports have it that the co-existence plotline is going to be the finishing touch of producer M. Night Shyamalan and make Season 3 of “Wayward Pines” as the final and conclusive one for the TV series.
The Season 2 of the TV series ended in a cliffhanger because it left the fans guessing on which side became victorious in the battle between humans and the Abbies.
