In Season 1 of “Wayward Pines,” the Abbey seemed to be primal carnivores that were inferior to humans in intellect. However “Wayward Pines” Season 2 revealed a twist. The Abbies led by their Queen, Margaret, played by Rochelle Okoye, proved that the Abbies were far more superior in strength and speed, they are also very intelligent.
During the Season 2 finale, the humans had to admit defeat and sought to save the race by returning to cryo-stasis. It became clear that the humans were really defeated by their own tendencies rather than by Abbie superiority.
It can be recalled that the ending of Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” saw the humans on the losing side in their battle against the Abbies. Forced into a corner, the humans, with the help of CJ Mitchum, played by Djimon Hounsou, decided to go back into cryo-stasis to wait for a more hopeful era sometime in the future.
It is highly possible that there will be a short supply already of humans in “Wayward Pines” Season 3 because the Abbies have already taken over the world.
Crouch explained that “Wayward Pines” Season 3 shall focus on exploring the human nature confronted by the threat of extinction of the species.
