Warner Bros Gives ‘The LEGO Movie Sequel’ a Go with Comedy Director Rob Schrab at the Helm

With the resounding worldwide success of “The LEGO Movie” a little over a year ago, it no longer came as a surprise to anybody that Warner Bros has finally announced that its follow-up would be forthcoming.

The studio announced on February 28 that “The LEGO Movie Sequel” will soon be in the works and it will be helmed by acclaimed comedy Director Rob Schrab, detailed the Philippine Star.

The movie shall also be the first full feature directorial debut of Rob Schrab, who has recently helmed episodes of such hit TV series as “Community,” “The Mindy Project,” and “Parks and Recreation.”

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed “The LEGO Movie” are reportedly now writing the screenplay of the movie sequel based on a story by Lord, Miller, Jared Stem and Michelle Morgan.

Perfect man for the job

Both Lord and Miller also came out with a joint statement where they express their excitement of collaborating and working together with Rob Schrab, describing the director as a comedy genius and a visual savant.

The two said that they have been stalking Rob for years just to entice him to work with them because aside from being a hard worker, the Director has the superb aesthetic values, and unique sense of humor that they consider as a passionately nerdy voice to “The LEGO Movie Sequel.”

Lord and Miller added that people who know Rob would surely be slapping their foreheads upon learning that he was chosen to direct “The LEGO Movie Sequel” because he is perfect for the job.

Schrab has already earned a WGA Award nomination for writing, directing and acting as executive producer of “The Sarah Silverman Program.”

He once earned an Annie Award nomination in 2007 for Best Writing in an Animated Feature Production, for the Oscar-nominated comedy “Monster House.” He has also been nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special for his work on the 81st Academy Awards.

It was not just mere nominations for Schrab as he already won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Three offshoot LEGO movies

Greg Silverman, Warner Bros Pictures’ president of creative development and worldwide production, officially announced “The LEGO Movie Sequel.”

Silvermas said that Warner Bros was inspired by the success of “The LEGO Movie” as it captivated audiences and critics on a global scale with the film’s irresistible blend of humor, imagination and fun. He then announced that the production outfit will continue to build on its relationship with The LEGO Group by coming up with “The LEGO Movie Sequel.”

It is to be the third offshoot film of “The LEGO Movie” following the announcement of “Ninjango” due to be released in September 2016 and the confirmed but still-untitled “Batman LEGO Movie” which would hit theaters in May 2017.
