Retail giant Walmart is said to be planning to put the clamps on Ronda Rousey’s memoir titled “My Fight, Your Fight” for being way too violent.
The initial report that came out said the retail giant will be banning the book but it turns out that Walmart will not. It will simply not put the book on its display shelves because they find the memoir of the UFC women’s bantamweight champion too violent.
Danit Marquardt, spokesperson for Walmart, clarified that they will not be banning Ronda Rousey’s book because they have been anticipating it in fact since last year. They have even opened the book for pre-ordering at the company website, which the retail giant is maintaining up to this time.
Marquardt said that they will not be putting the book on display in their store but buyers can instead pick up their copies from any Walmart store or order it online if they like once it is officially released on May 12, reports TMZ.
Stock room not on display
In other words, there will be plenty of copies of the book on Walmart’s stock room but not out on its book display shelves where customers can see.
So when the book is officially launched to the retail markets on May 12, customers interested in purchasing it from Walmar can use the ‘site to store’ feature of its website and pick up a copy at any local store.
Walmart did not disclose the details of its own findings as to how it finds the book being too violent but according to Marquardt, they just discovered a few reasons why the retail giant decided to offer it online only. However, he refused to elaborate on the details and explained further.
The Walmart spokesperson said that there are a variety of factors that their store chain looks into when determining what items to offer their customers.
A form of censorship
Marquardt said that they will monitor the response of customers on Ronda Rousey’s book especially online where Walmart is selling millions of items compared to the 150,000 products that are normally available on Walmart Supercenters.
Ronda Rousey’s book has reportedly pre-sold thousands of copies at Barnes & Noble.
Book publisher Judith Regan was really surprised with Walmart’s decision on Ronda Rousey’s memoir, saying she can’t believe that censorship is still happening in America.
In her recent TV appearance at “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on NBC, Ronda Rousey explained that some people have been asking her to stop fighting at the UFC because the sport is anti-woman and anti-feminist. But she averred that UFC is the most pro-woman sport in the world. She added that fighting is not just a man’s thing, it’s a human thing. To say that the sport is anti-woman is to say that it’s also anti-feminist, Rousey said.
