The next episodes of “Vikings” Season 4 will see the return of Travis Fimmel’s King Ragnar Lothbrok. According to showrunner Michael Hirst, the second half of the historical drama will deal with Ragnar’s return instead of what he did while he vanished.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Hirst says that the highlight of the next few episodes will explain why Ragnar has returned.
The Norse king has been away from Kattegat long enough for his sons to hate him to death. Two of them promised to kill their own father, but could not bring themselves to do so when he was back in their presence.
Hirst hints that because of losing the battle against Rollo, the shame of losing was too great for Ragnar to stay around. Ragnar absented himself, but he was just too famous to be immediately replaced.
Although it’s very evident that by the season’s end, the Scandinavian king will already meet his demise, speculations say that the final episodes will focus on him to celebrate his legacy.
Latest spoilers suggest that an ally of Ragnar will put him down specifically King Aelle, who will leave him to die in a pit of snakes alluding to what really happened in history.
There are also rumors pointing to the king falling ill and eventually die after the war in Paris.
According to Christian Today, the second half of Season 4 will have more humanity as the hurdles ahead of Ragnar will spawn his decisions to start a new plan to retain his power.
Hirst says that aside from Ragnar’s inner troubles, the rest of the season will also showcase the hurdles and divisions among his allies. Reports suggest that a brawl will arise because of a woman.
While it is expected that Alexander Ludwig’s Bjorn would take over his father’s throne, but it looks like Alex Andersen’s Ivar the Boneless is also vying for the position.
Parent Herald notes that the fourth son of Ragnar would bring the army up front to dominate the lands of the York.
Meanwhile, an unlikely alliance between Bjorn and Rollo will strike. In the promo clip, Bjorn was seen asking his uncle, Rollo, for help with the latter helping Bjorn cross the Mediterranean without hesitation.
While Gisla does not approve of the alliance, it looks like the teamwork between Bjorn and Rollo will be one thing to look forward in the second half of Season 4.
As for Katheryn Winnick’s Lagertha, it was recently revealed that her new lover is Josefin Asplund’s Astrid. The trailer for episode 11 featured Lagertha kissing another woman.
Hirst says that Lagertha’s new relationship with Astrid has nothing to do with the fact that she’s discovered she’s a lesbian and is coming out. The character was recently involved with a woman in earlier seasons.
The series creator says the relationship is based on the fact that she feels more comfortable around women because all the men in her life have either betrayed her, used her for their own purposes, or has let her down.
Reports say that with her new lover, Lagertha will be back and hungrier than ever. She will reportedly make Aslaug pay for everything she has done.
Reports say that the former Queen of Kattegat will plot to kill Alyssa Sutherland’s Asluag. In the teaser for the upcoming episode, Lagertha can be heard swearing vengeance on Aslaug for taking away her husband, her world, and her happiness.
Aslaug was also seen falling on the floor, weeping and curled up in pain with blood on her hands. While it wasn’t clear if her pain was caused by Lagertha, Aslaug is for certain in trouble when the show returns.
