The current fourth season of “Vikings” may be on its spring break, but it is expected to roll its second half in the next couple of months. History’s hit historical TV series is highly speculated to come back to small screens in July.
To be exact, the show is reported to air the second half of its fourth season on the first Thursday of July, or almost three months after the last episode aired.
Econotimes reports that the show is rumored to resume with the rest of the fourth season right after HBO’s “Game of Thrones” Season 6 wraps up.
Apparently, History doesn’t want to coincide its TV series with HBO’s hit series given the midseason finale premiered three days before the sixth season of “Game of Thrones.”
However, History has not yet made a comment about the timing and still hasn’t announced any return date for “Vikings” Season 4.
According to the Den of Geek, History actually added four extra episodes for this season, allowing a midseason finale for the series. Initially, the season received a 16-episode order.
Compared to other seasons, the current season is the longest to date. The first season only had nine episodes while the second and third seasons both had 10 episodes.
The second half of Season 4 will focus on Travis Fimmel’s King Ragnar Lothbrok and his children, who have now all grown up to become warriors in their own right.
His sons have already been primed to take over the throne should they need to prove themselves worthy to replace their father.
Movie News Guide reports the Bjorn Ironside, played by Alexander Ludwig, will likely inherit the throne as he is the eldest but Ragnar’s youngest son, Ivar the Boneless, played by James Quinn Markey, will prove more worthy of it.
Reports say that Ragnar himself has seen in his youngest son that he will be next to lead the warriors in the scourge of France and England.
Spoilers suggest that Ivar will likely take over his father and that he will spearhead the invasion of England.
Speculations say that the show will be shifting focus to Ivar’s reign and Bjorn’s exploration of the mythic oceans of the Mediterranean with Floki and Helga.
During the midseason finale, an estranged Ragnar returned and challenged his rebellious sons and others from Kattegat to kill him and become the new king after the Vikings failed in their conquest in Paris.
Prior to that, the episode, entitled “The Last Ship,” saw Ragnar and his warriors engage in a ferocious battle with his brother Rollo, played by Clive Standen, only to lose in the end.
Perhaps, the biggest plot twist in the midseason finale was when Rollo outsmarted his brother and won the battle, much to fans’ surprise.
Reports say that episode 11 will resume with the fallen Norse king and it seems as though he will not take his loss against Rollo lightly. The midseason finale did give fans a glimpse of how self-destructive Ragnar can be.
As per Crossmap, when fans get a glimpse of Ragnar again, he could potentially be on the verge of having a mental breakdown.
As for Rollo, despite now being the Duke of Paris, he still feels like there’s a missing piece in him. There’s still something in his past that he can never let go, the fact that he is still a Viking.
In the trailer for episode 11, Rollo is seen fighting alongside Bjorn. Series creator Michael Hirst says that the show will stick with historical facts which means that the two are possibly teaming up to raid another territory.
Linus Roache’s King Ecbert also teases to offer a deal to Ragnar that he will find very difficult to refuse in the coming episodes of Season 4.
