The long wait for Season 4 of the historical drama TV series “Vikings” is over as the popular show premiered on the History Channel on a highly triumphant note.
The first episode of Season 4 of “Vikings” simply reminded its viewers why the TV series is arguably the best character-driven historical drama series on the small screen these days that is filled with politics, mysticism, a fantastic cast of characters, and a terrible betrayal, details Forbes.
The premiere episode, titled “A Good Treason” gives viewers a good idea of every wretched and petty jealousy that Rollo felt toward his brother Ragnar.
King Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, is sick and all his close people are betraying him one by one, including his brother King Rognvaldsson Rollo, played by Clive Standen.
Showrunner Michael Hirst confirmed that there will be more problems brewing between the warrior brothers. Ragnar already knows the betrayal of his brother but was too sick to make any decision about it. He was also blood, first and foremost.
Ragnar’s eldest son Bjorn Ironside, played by Alexander Ludwig, took the chance to allow his uncle to stay in Paris and pursue his dreams, likely thinking of eliminating another contender for his father’s throne as King of Denmark, reports the International Business Times of UK.
But while they were on their way back to Kattegat, it was also made clear during the episode that the enemies of Ragnar are now making their stride towards the crown.
Proving his loyalty to France
During the premiere episode of “Vikings” Season 4, Rollo married Princess Gisla, the daughter of Emperor Charles of France, and also went out of his way to slaughter the remaining Vikings in the city by taking them to a forest.
At the height of the slaughter, one Viking soldier was heard crying out that their King Ragnar would come back to avenge their deaths.
But King Ragnar has his own issues to deal with and can only make better decisions when he is well again.
In order to prove his identity to his famous parents, Bjorn will need to prove to Ragnar and Lagertha that he can survive, grow up and be independent. He is going to go into the wilderness where he will face three very difficult and different kinds of trials.
When Bjorn returns, he will be a changed man where he can perhaps prove to his father that he is ready to become the successor to the throne of Kattegat, hints Hirst.
Other contenders
There is also Queen Aslaug, played by Alyssa Sutherland, who seems to be interested in ruling Kattegat as she was seen asking the Seer if she will take power if and when King Ragnar dies.
Aslaug’s attempt is not a betrayal per se but it is obvious that she also wants power which she can also get if Ragnar dies.
Then there is also Floki, the once beloved shipbuilder turned traitor and murderer. Bjorn surprises everyone when he has Floki arrested for the murder of Athelstan. Upon learning of the act of his son against Floki, he chastised Bjorn for being foolish by saying that he never wanted Floki arrested.
It seems that Ragnar is gravely disappointed with his son Bjorn and Bjorn also feels the same for his father, which means that he too wants to have the throne of Kattegat sometime in the future.
One of the most appetizing advance information about “Vikings” Season 4 is the possible death of King Ragnar Lothbrok and that he will be succeeded to the throne in Kattegat, Denmark by his first-born son Bjorn Ironside.
However, before King Ragnar bids adieu, the early part of Season 4 would reportedly see him falling for Chinese character Yidu, played by Dianne Doan.
Reports have it that Yidu will shake things up not only for the natives of Kattegat but possibly the mind and heart as well of King Ragnar.
