Episode 2 of the current third season of “Vikings” aired, and it brought some interesting plot developments to the table. It appears that the following episodes of the show are going to see some serious conflicts, so fans should prepare for a good dose of drama. But then again, it wouldn’t be “Vikings” without that, so the producers of the show definitely know what their fans are looking for.
Rollo charges at a wounded enemy soldier, leading to the soldier’s death, which raises some questions about the way Rollo is acting in the heads of those around him, particularly Torstein. Viewers are led to believe that Ragnar’s brother is starting to change his views on the whole situation, and will soon come to grips with the reality of it all.
Torstein then has to lose his arm, as his wound is otherwise going to cost him his life. The following scene, in which Floki carries out the amputation, was praised by many reviewers for showing a very gritty, realistic look into some of the traditions and relationships between Vikings. In the end, Torstein might be without one of his arms, but pretty much all fans are certain that this will do nothing to tame him or make him less powerful. If anything, the anger over the loss might serve as some extra fuel.
Another interesting development in the plot is on a more general level, by starting to pay more attention to the element of religion in the story. While until this episode, religion was portrayed in a mostly realistic, down to earth way in the show, things might change in the future, if what we saw in episode 2 is to be of any indication. Siggy, Helga and Aslaug have been having some shared visions, which could take the story of the show in the realm of the paranormal.
And even though the writers of “Vikings” likely won’t do anything too drastic in this regard, it would still be interesting to see them introducing some more mystic elements to the overall plot. There is a lot of potential for that in a show like “Vikings”, especially with what we’ve seen so far, and with the way the characters are being developed.
Could we see a deeper, more mystical story unfolding around some of the show’s characters over the next episodes, or were recent events just a one-time incident that will not be indicative of the show’s future? Both are possible, but fans seem hopeful that the show’s producers decide to explore more interesting grounds over the next episodes that they have planned. Even without that though, the show definitely has a lot of interesting events coming up, judging by what we’ve seen so far.
