Valve might be adamant that “Half-Life 3” is not coming anytime soon, and they are claiming to be working on other titles at the moment, but recent reports indicate that this might not be completely true. Valve recently revealed that they have been working on their own entry into the VR market, and according to the latest rumors, they might actually be using “Half-Life 3” as a testing platform for the new technology.
It was already reported some time ago that Valve are using assets from “Half-Life” in the development of their new headset, but it wasn’t clarified to what extent the company is relying on the game’s assets for their new project. It was implied that they were just reusing old art and other assets in order to save some work on the VR headsets, but now new rumors have come to light indicating that Valve are actually developing “Half-Life 3” along with the new headset.
The Steam Database also reportedly got updated with some new information about “Half-Life 3”, but Valve took that entry down shortly after posting it and haven’t acknowledged it ever since. It’s not known if it was a mistake or another one of Valve’s “hints” about their current developments, but these things have been happening far too often lately for it all to be a coincidence.
A while ago, there were also reports that a Swedish retailer had put up the game for preorder, but nothing came out of that in the end. It’s not the first time it’s happened, and some retailers have been trying to profit from the yet-unreleased game for a long time. “Duke Nukem Forever” was another game that suffered from a similar problem, with some preorders dating back to the 90s, and becoming Internet sensations.
It could actually make a lot of sense for Valve to be using “Half-Life 3” for the development of their new VR headset, as releasing the game with VR support from the beginning could make it a very exciting release right from the start. Many fans of the franchise seem worried for its future, claiming that there’s no way Valve could live up to the hype surrounding “Half-Life 3” at this point, but this could be one way to address the situation.
There are various major events coming up in the gaming industry this year, so we can just patiently wait and see if Valve will be among the companies to announce something exciting. Judging by what Valve themselves are saying though, this won’t be the year that we’ll finally get “Half-Life 3”. Of course, it could be just a trick from Gabe Newell to surprise his fans even more.
