A new cutscene and dialogue mechanic of the open-world action adventure third-person shooter video game “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” was presented during the PlayStation Experience held in San Francisco, California on December 5.
Neil Druckman, creative director of game developer Naughty Dog, and several cast actors of the widely-anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive video game set to be released on March 18, 2016 held court in a panel during the PSX event.
The cutscene of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” shown during the PSX event featured Nathan Drake’s brother, Sam. However, what excited the fans and gamers more is the fact that for the first time in the video game series, the fourth installment of the franchise will be getting its long-overdue backstory on Nathan, notes Hardcore Gamer.
Despite going on three death-defying adventures with gamers already, not much is known about Nathan Drake in his past before he teamed up with Sully in Cartagena, Colombia back when he was just a teenage boy.
What gamers know about Drake
What gamers know about Drake was mostly derived from his conversation with Katherine Marlowe after he was drugged and taken to her in Yemen during the events of “Uncharted 3.”
Based on Marlowe’s file, when Drake turned five years old, his mother committed suicide and his father had relinquished custody of him to the state, leading to Nathan ending up in Saint Francis Boys’ Home.
The gameplay footage of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” during the PSX event also showed Nathan believing his brother to be dead after he saw him get shot. But the hole in the story is that even if Sam was presumed dead, critics are wondering why did Marlowe not bring up the fact to Drake.
She has mentioned to him his dead mother, so it is ironic why she did not twist the knife further and trudge up the past about his dead brother and how Drake abandoned him after Sam was shot. Nathan also did not bother to check if his own brother is still breathing or not before leaving him to bleed out.
Latest trailer
Meanwhile, a new trailer for “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” will be shown ahead of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” film in select theaters across the US, reports IGN.
It was Sony who made the official announcement regarding the upcoming trailer of the widely anticipated role-playing game in a post on the official PlayStation Twitter account on December 17.
The upcoming trailer follows the still-talked-about gameplay footage of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” presented by Naughty Dog during the PlayStation Experience event early this month.
It was also during the event where creative director Neil Druckmann confirmed that the branching dialogue options of the video game would not be that extensive, but would be enough to make fans really appreciate it.
Prior to the PSX event, the gamer excitement to the release next year of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” was somehow lessened when developer Naughty Dog announced that it would also feature micro-transactions in its multiplayer mode.
Gamers know that micro-transactions usually mean the developer will charge money for certain add-on features in the multiplayer mode of the game, which is the reason why some are planning to shun it.
There were even claims that game developers cut game contents just so they can make additional features and charge money for it at a later date.
Naughty Dog decided to keep silent from the issue fearing that any statement from the company would have an impact on the reception of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” when it exclusively rolls out to the PlayStation 4 next year.
However, a former employee of Naughty Dog involved in the development of the video game decided to come out to defend the micro-transaction feature of the multiplayer mode of “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.”
Eric Monacelli, former community strategist of Naughty Dog, said that the studio’s decision to use micro-transactions has nothing to do with the intention of charging gamers money. He says that if the content is good enough and gamers want to pay for it, then why not just pay for it.
