Almost 30 years after “Top Gun” was shown in 1986, there are now talks that Tom Cruise is now seriously considering making the sequel.
Accordingly, after the success of “Mission: Impossible 5” shown in July, the actor is contemplating on making two major film projects – “Mission: Impossible 6” and “Top Gun 2.”
Because of the success of his “Mission: Impossible” film series and the kind of actions they present, Tom Cruise is said to be entertaining the idea that “Top Gun 2” should also have hair-raising action in the level of the “Mission: Impossible” movies and that it should have real stunts and real planes too.
The actor said that he is not going to do a sequel to “Top Gun” if it shall not have those basic elements. After 30 years, his character Maverick could no longer be the young combat pilot it was during “Top Gun” so it is possible that his character may just be desk-bound.
Now that the actor is in his early 50s, it is quite absurd to even consider his character in “Top Gun 2” as still the daring pilot Maverick although given the kind of stunts that he has been performing in his “Mission: Impossible” movies, the actor still can hack it as an action star.
While the initial reports said that Cruise will just play a cameo appearance in “Top Gun 2” because of his age and will just serve as flight instructor or an Air Force official to teach some young fighter pilots the art of air combat fighting, the idea has been shelved by the producers. They really wanted Tom Cruise and his Mavericks character as the star of the movie, after all he will still be the main selling point of the film, notes the Inquisitr.
A talented and driven actor
There are reports that the actor is very interested in continuing his hard work on his future films and keep pleasing his fans, which mean that his subsequent films will be full of actions and death-defying stunts.
Contrary to reports that his popularity is now on a decline, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” made good at the tills again, which only proves the popularity and bankability of Tom Cruise as a Hollywood action star. He is obviously a talented and driven actor and just does not want to rest on his laurels.
It has also been reported that Tom Cruise wants to bring the younger audience to “Top Gun 2,” because he believes, and he may be accurate in his assessment t hat most of the people who have seen the first “Top Gun” film in 1986 are pretty much around his age at this time.
Accordingly, the plan is to modernize “Top Gun 2” a bit and make it relevant in the modern times, which is the challenging part because fighter jets operated by actual pilots are becoming a novel idea these days as even warfare is now moving towards automation.
Unlike before when ocular means pilots seeing for themselves the actual site of the target, these days, drones, and other remote tools can already do the function on their behalf without putting their lives in danger.
Back in “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise as Maverick flew the F14-A Tomcat fighter jet and it is now way past its prime so it would be a challenge for the producers and director of “Top Gun 2” how they intend to do it, without really focusing so much on computer-generated imageries or CGIs because Tom Cruise wants a real plane for the movie in the first place, cites The National.
A sequel too long in the making
The “Top Gun” sequel has been planned as early as 2010 when original director Tony Scott broached the idea back then. He mentioned then that the sequel would involve Tom Cruise playing Maverick again, but the story would be focused on the kids of today’s Air Force operating drones from darkened rooms.
However, drone warfare is merely like playing video games in the comfort of one’s living room and does not have cinematic appeal at all.
Top Gun was so high school, so predictable and Kelly Mcginnis looked like his older aunt. How is it Tom wants ‘real planes’ now to make Top Gun 2 believable? Did Top Gun one just fake planes? So many of his movies are so ridiculous with him being the rebellious rogue who gets the girl at the end of the movie. Days of Thunder was embarrassing.
