After their successful team-up and box-office results of the “Divergent” in 2014 and “Insurgent” early this year, Theo James and Shailene Woodley are all set to reprise their roles again as Four and Tris respectively in the two-part third movie of the trilogy, officially titled “Allegiant.”
The Divergent trilogy is a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in the Divergent Universe. It follows the story of Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior as she explores her identity within a society that defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation. It also has a romantic subplot between Tris and one of her instructors in the Dauntless faction, nicknamed Four.
“Allegiant” is due to hit theaters on March 18, 2016 and basing on the performance at the box-office of “Divergent” and “Insurgent,” the third movie is expected to also make waves at the tills.
Not a happy ending
Veronica Roth, the author of the Divergent trilogy, reveals that Shailene Woodley’s Iris character in “Allegiant” must die but she is not sure if the movie will follow what she has written in the book, notes KpopStarz.
When fans learned of the unhappy ending on the romantic relationship of Four and Tris in the book, they made a petition to change the ending in the movie. Fan efforts however were not enough to dissuade the 26-year-old author to change the fate of Tris in her book, as a matter of conviction.
Veronica Roth was recently asked if she was willing to change the ending and prevent Tris from dying in “Allegiant.” The female author explained that she has actually consulted Shailene Woodley about it and also asked the actress what she thought of the ending. Shailene said that she really enjoyed the way it ended, lending further credence to the conviction of Veronica Roth.
Roth added that she wrote “Allegiant” because she thought that it was the way it needed to be told so she really feels very strongly about her story. She admits that some people feel strongly against her ending but she does not know if the film will make the revision. She however doubts if the movie will do two endings because she believes that no one has ever done that.
Two-part final movie
Just like “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” the Divergent trilogy will have its final movie “Allegiant” split into two parts and thus two films as well.
Many fans of the Divergent trilogy believes that the two-part “Allegiant” movies could open up the possibility of another ending for Tris where she may survive and live happily ever after with Four.
Should that happens, it would not be the first time that screenwriters modified a few things in a movie based on a book or a novel for the sake of satisfying the need of fans for a good and happy ending.
Veronica Roth was also happy with some modification that the writers of the trilogy film did that is not in her book, particularly the decision to introduce the box, which can only be unlocked by somebody who is 100% Divergent.
