When Divergent: Allegiant” turned out to be a lackluster performer, rumors started swirling that its second part, “Divergent: Ascendant” shall be canceled shocked a lot of fans and the cast as well.
Lead stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James were just as shocked as everyone else saying that they signed up to do four films in the movie series and they hope that Lionsgate will consider doing the last film despite the last movie’s box office failure.
Ansel Elgort, who plays Caleb Prior revealed that he was shocked as well. He says that he only found out about the rumors online but Lionsgate nor anyone from the production has not spoken to them about anything.
However, the cancellation of the final installment in the “Divergent” series may not be as bad news to James as the actor now has enough time to plan his wedding with longtime girlfriend Ruth Kearney.
The Bitbag reports that because of the British actor’s commitment to the film franchise, as well as his growing popularity, his wedding with Kearney has been postponed multiple times.
Aside from this, Shailene and Theo have been rumored to be secretly dating since the birth of the film series. “The Fault in Our Stars” actress has been reported to be the cause of the couple’s split, to which both parties denied.
The Irish actress apparently became jealous of the growing bond between her beau and Shailene. She was also reported to be present in Theo’s filming days to watch him closely and to warn Woodley.
In response to this allegations, the tandem has since denied that they’re an item and are just really close friends and their chemistry just transcends on screen as their characters Tris and Four, respectively.
While there has been no official statement from Lionsgate about the cancellation of “Divergent: Ascendant,” this will mean that production will be delayed as well as its premiere date. The film is slated for a June 2017 release but until now, production has not yet commenced.
This will then give James and Kearney enough time to plan out their special day. The couple has been engaged for quite a long time and both have expressed their desire to tie the knot.
Theo has already a lot of projects lined up for him. In fact, he’s even being considered as the new actor to play the iconic role of James Bond. Kearney, on the other hand, is also busy with her show “Flaked.”
The couple, who has been dating since 2009, has always been elusive about their relationship which is why some fans wouldn’t be surprised if news came out that they already exchanged I Dos.
Future plans for ‘Divergent: Ascendant’
Some say that “Divergent: Allegiant” did not do well in theaters because it took away a lot of elements from the book plus James and Woodley’s chemistry is already withering on screen.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Miles Teller, who portrays Peter in the film series, says that he understands that changes happen but the news is just shocking.
Miles also said that turning the last installment into a TV film will just ruin the franchise. The “Fantastic Four” star says that if Lionsgate decides to go that path, they will just mess something up that was not the original intention.
He adds that he’s positive most of the cast won’t return to reprise their roles if the studio does indeed decide to pursue “Divergent: Ascendant” as a TV film.
Lionsgate executive Jon Feltheimer has previously told Cinema Blend that they seemed to have rushed “Divergent: Allegiant” which resulted with its disappointing blockbuster results. It grossed $180 million on a $110 budget which is unsatisfactory, to say the least.
