The return of Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert in the eighth and final season of the American supernatural drama TV series “The Vampire Diaries” has yet to be confirmed but actor Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore on the show, says that his character’s encounter with Elena may not be a romantic one.
He said that if and when Elena Gilbert comes back to Mystic Falls, the rumored Delena reunion may not be a romantic one at all. Somerhalder also added that Elena may or may not end up with Damon or Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley, at all, reports the iTech Post.
It could be recalled that before her character went on deep slumber at the end of Season 6, Elena Gilbert lost everything she has ever loved. Her house was burned down and she also ended up in a box.
Thus far, it is only executive Julie Plec who have openly stated that she wants Nina Dobrev to return to the final season of “The Vampire Diaries” to complete her character’s storyline. But the reports that subsequently came out said that Dobrev shall be returning to reprise her Katherine Pierce character instead of Elena Gilbert.
The CW President Mark Pedowitz also clarified quite recently that the return of Nina Dobrev to the supernatural drama series has yet to be confirmed because discussions with the actress are still ongoing. But Pedowitz also wants Dobrev to make her final stint in “The Vampire Diaries,” which will be premiering on The CW on October 21 or just a few days from today.
Appearing in crossover episode too?
There are also reports saying that if and when Nina Dobrev returns, she will not just be appearing on “The Vampire Diaries,” she will likewise be around for the crossover episode of the TV series with its spinoff show, “The Originals,” details the University Herald.
Accordingly, it is to be an attempt of Julie Plec, who also is an executive producer of “The Originals,” to protect the spinoff TV series from being canceled after its fourth season.
There are speculations going around that Season 4 of “The Originals” might be its last as The CW moved its premiere date to January next year instead of its usual October release date.
That is also in addition to the reduction in its episode order from the usual 22 episodes to 13 for Season 4.
Safe to say, the very least that Nina Dobrev would have for “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8 and “The Originals” Season 4 are cameo appearances, which would be more than enough to boost the ratings of both shows.
Whatever the case may be, the return of Dobrev should really spark renewed enthusiasm on “The Vampire Diaries” and its spinoff series “The Originals” especially if it is true that she will also be part of the crossover episode of the two supernatural TV series.
Reuniting with Stefan instead?
While previous reports have been saying that Dobrev will take on the role of Katherine Pierce when she returns to “The Vampire Diaries,” the latest speculations now point out that she would be returning as Elena Gilbert.
But instead of reuniting with Damon Salvatore, Elena shall reportedly be coming back to the arms of her first love in Mystic Falls and it is no other than Stefan Salvatore.
The rumors began when the Paul Wesley recently posted a photo on his Instagram account featuring a girl that resembles Dobrev. His post was also a confirmation that the actor will also be directing one episode of “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8.
