It looks like deep relationships will be the main focus of “The Vampire Diaries” for a while now, as the show started its new seventh season with some interesting moments, particularly between Damon and Bonnie. Other characters had the relationships between them explored in more detail as well, and we generally saw a lot of development forward in this area, so it’s clear that this is going to be the trend for a while.
Damon is still deeply affected by what happened recently, and he also shared some negative emotions with Bonnie, letting her know exactly how much displeasure he was starting to develop for her. Lily, on the other hand, has been having trouble getting people to listen to her, and the Heretics disregarded her wishes and started doing whatever they wanted in the very first episode of the season.
Their actions have been causing more and more trouble for Lily, and we don’t know how she plans on dealing with them, especially when they are being so obvious with their activities. At the same time Lily was asking them to be more subtle and start slowly disappearing from the public eye – so this might cause some serious issues for Lily in the short term, and we don’t know what her plans are at the moment.
Her situation was made particularly difficult by Stephan and Caroline, although Lily insists that she and her family are tougher than people are suspecting, so they shouldn’t hope to defeat her that easily. Judging by everything the Heretics did though, even Lily might start to reevaluate her attitude towards them and consider ways to get rid of them in the big picture. She ends up resorting to some questionable deals in order to get the situation under control, but as we know her character, this might not last for too long.
As we said above, a major part of the episode focused on the resentment that Damon was starting to develop towards Bonnie, and this will likely be an important topic throughout the whole season in general. It’s not clear how the relationship between the two characters is going to progress, but it would be interesting to see them getting closer if Damon is ever able to overcome the loss of Elena.
In the end, Damon still cares about Bonnie, even though he’s feeling so much negativity towards her for his own reasons, and the relationship between them will be quite strange in the long run. They definitely need each other’s support, that much is clear – but staying close to one another might also prove harmful for both of them if they are not careful.
We are also curious how Caroline and Stefan are going to move forward with their own relations, and they were in a weird spot when the episode started. It will probably get even weirder in the future, looking at their state, and they both acknowledge the unusual nature of the situation. Stefan takes charge of things for the time being and tells Caroline how they should interact for at least a little while until she heals properly.
How long that is going to take is difficult to tell however, as she admitted that she might need quite a long time to get over the loss of her mother, and she might not ever be able to overcome that situation completely. We don’t know what the writers have planned for her, but that part of the plot is definitely shaping up in a very interesting way.
