The American supernatural drama TV series “The Vampire Diaries” is currently on its seventh season but The CW has already renewed it for Season 8 beginning in the latter part of this year.
However, there have been reports as of late that “The Vampire Diaries” may only be good for eight seasons and that its Season 8 is going to be the hit show’s swan song.
Those reports came out as a result of a recent interview with actor Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore on “The Vampire Diaries,” at the WalkerStalkerCon where he said that they have decided to do one last season for the popular TV series and do the story justice.
That’s in addition to the statement made by actress Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennett in the series, that she will be leaving her character on the TV series after Season 8.
Too early to tell
But executive producer Julie Plec believes that it is too early to say whether Season 8 is going to be the last for “The Vampire Diaries”
In a recent interview, Plec said that she was so happy to get Season 8 for the show that even the idea of Season 9 is so far away. She admits that she has not even started thinking about it, notes TV Line.
She nonetheless acknowledged the recent statements made by some of the actors of the show about the TV series wrapping up after eight seasons.
Plec said that she wishes Kat Graham everything she wants and she can stay on the show as long as she wants if they are given the opportunity to go beyond Season 8.
She also said that every time they enter a new season, they always think that there are no more stories to tell and that they are already done.
And then they start talking about it and realize that they still got a lot of gas in the tank. She expects the same thing when they start doing Season 8, which would start production next month.
The executive producer said that if they feel strongly that they need to keep going, they will surely advocate for that with the network. However, if they feel that there is nothing else they can do, they might make a call up to the bosses and say their piece. She added that they won’t know how much do they have left until they start talking about it creatively.
Plec said that “The Vampire Diaries” may still have plenty of gas left in the tank for all they know after Season 8.
The hunt for Stefan continues
Meanwhile, episode 17 of “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 aired on April 8 on The CW and saw Damon and Valerie going on a mission to save Stefan amid the destruction of the Phoenix Stone sword, cites Melty.
The episode, entitled “I Went to the Woods,” continued the time-jump storyline of episode 16 with Rayna resuming her hunt for Stefan after spending three years in captivity in The Armory.
Rayna is determined to put away the young Salvatore for good. And the only way that she will stop in hunting down Stefan is if he transfers his mark of the Phoenix Stone sword on his brother Damon through magical means, which she also suggested.
Stefan and Damon could not also kill Rayna because if she is killed, Stefan would also die because of the mark that she put on her. So Stefan just decided to run and get away from Rayna as far as he could.
Rayna finally managed to trap Stefan’s soul in the Phoenix Stone, but not before Mary Louise and Nora destroyed the Phoenix Stone sword, and thus, all the souls that Rayna put in it became free.
