Fans of “The Originals” have not been very happy with the recent rumors about the show, as there are more and more claims that the upcoming season 4 could be its last. While that would obviously be a disappointing development by itself, additional rumors indicate that the show could also end on a pretty bad note, further making fans nervous about the new season.
More specifically, there are claims that Klaus may be killed off towards the end of season 4, or perhaps at its very end, and that could be how the show actually ends. This sounds like a very risky move for the producers for various reasons, as the show has already suffered a bit in the ratings department, and this could sink it even further.
Why did the network decide to cut down on the number of episodes in the new season of “The Originals” anyway? The main reason most fans seem to think of is the upcoming cancellation of the show, and many are drawing parallels to the way “The Vampire Diaries” was handled.
It’s also typical for The CW to reduce a show’s episode count before cancelling it, as the network doesn’t want to invest too much in productions that are about to be killed off. It’s still possible that “The Originals” might be saved even if cancellation is on the table, if season 4 manages to improve its ratings and raise viewership numbers significantly.
But on the other hand, if the claims about Klaus are true, this doesn’t leave many options for the writers for any future seasons, and it could indeed be the end of the show. It’s possible – although very unlikely – that the producers could find a way to continue the story while focusing on someone else, but it’s arguable if that would even be “The Originals” anymore.
Other rumors about season 4 give it a slightly brighter outlook, as there are indications that Klaus will be able to resolve many lingering issues in his life, and will clear any enemies he still has. Whether or not this will end with his death, or if that would be an unrelated development, is open to interpretation.
But it’s still good to see that the writers are at least planning to let the character be killed off in a respectful way, resolving his issues beforehand. Otherwise, the show could end on a seriously negative note, something that would leave a bad taste in fans’ mouths for a long time afterwards.
Even if “The Originals” does end after this season though, at least it had a good run. What started as a seemingly random idea to make a spin-off based on the highly successful “The Vampire Diaries” eventually evolved into a unique production with its own active following, and many fans claim to have had a great ride along the way.
If the producers manage to pull off an interesting season 4, one that not only resolves all pending issues for Klaus and the others, but also manages to tie up all the loose ends in a sensible way, we expect that the show will be remembered fondly.
It seems like season 4 will be especially good for those who originally got drawn due to “The Vampire Diaries”, as it will feature various actors from the original show. This should offer some nice nostalgic moments for viewers, while it could also make the story quite interesting for a few episodes too.
