The Legend of Korra Season 4 is heating up with each new episode. If you thought that last week’s episode was the best that you have seen so far from the creators then this week’s episode will blow your mind.
The Legend of Korra Season 4, episode 5 had instances of some of the best writing that the show had seen in all the seasons put together. The depiction of Kuvira has blown over the fans, and they can’t seem to get enough of her. The writers have created Kuvira as a frightening military dictator. The depiction is realistic to the tee. The manner in which they have portrayed her and those near her is lauded for being very close to real life.
The writers have not created Kuvira, as one who is just strong and powerful. Her power is not there merely because of her calibre as a fighter, but because she is smart. If power depends on your physical strength alone, then it doesn’t last. There is always someone whom you meet in the course of time, who is bigger and stronger than you are. However, if your strength lies in your mind then the deal is different. This aspect of Kuvira’s character has been dealt with by the writers brilliantly.
Episode 5 of The Legend of Korra Season 4 starts with Kuvira setting up camp outside Zaofu and demands them to surrender to the Earth Empire. Korra makes an entry to help negotiate terms between the two sides, but is late. She fails to stop the conflict. Varrick and Zhu Li, who have been captured by Kuvira to work on “weapon-ized” spirit energy, along with Bolin, realise that Kuvira isn’t the peacekeeper. They try to flee, but are captured and sentenced to a re-education camp.
While the three are being taken away, Zhu Li makes a sudden pledge of allegiance with Kuvira. She betrays Varrick and Bolin. While Varrick is taken away to “weapon-ize” the spirit vines, Bolin is sent to a re-education camp. While this move on Zhu Li’s part has shaken up fans, some are of the opinion that this is part of a greater plan.
This episode focuses on Varrick to a great extent. The writers haven’t dealt with him for a very long time – probably thinking of how best to bring him back into the story line. With the spirit energy plot in the picture, Varrick has an important role to play. The role suits him and lets his character shine. The viewers must have noticed that Varrick’s character has grown. He is slowly turning into a person who is concerned about those around him, rather than focusing solely on himself.
