The sixth episode of The Legend of Korra Season 6 is titled “The Battle of Zaofu.” In this episode, Korra fights Kuvira in an attempt to save the city of Zaofu and rescue Suyin Beifong and her sons. The previous episode had shown Varrick and Bolin imprisoned by Baatar Jr. along with Kuvira’s forces. While Varrick is forced to work on the weaponized spirit energy, Bolin was sent to a re-education camp.
The Legend of Korra Season 4 episode 6 opens with Suyin and her twins, Wing and Wei, entering Kuvira’s camp to capture her. Kuvira, being the intelligent leader that she is, anticipates the move and captures the three of them. Suyin’s daughter, Opal, convinces Korra to save her mother and decides to fight Kuvira in spite of taking an oath of non-violence when she had become an Airbender.
In the meantime, we have Baatar Jr. accompanying Varrick and Bolin to the re-education camp. He manages to force Varrick to join the weaponry and use the spirit vines to create something that would benefit Kuvira’s army. Since the last episode, we have seen that the makers of The Legend of Korra have given a purpose to Varrick’s character. He is no longer the self-centred man that he used to be.
Kuvira meets up with Korra and Opal and agrees to let Su and her sons go safely if Zaofu is handed over to her peacefully. She says that Suyin had been unethical in attacking Kuvira when peaceful negotiations were still on. Kuvira’s reason for wanting Zaofu was its resources, which can be distributed equally across the country. Opal saw right through Kuvira’s intentions and knew that what she wanted in reality was power.
Korra and Kuvira agree to fight one on one. The condition was, if Korra wins, Zaofu is free from Kuvira, and if Kuvira wins, then Korra will not interfere in Kuvira’s matters in the future. The fans were expecting a tough battle between Avatar Korra and a fighter of Kuvira’s caliber, but it was the saddest Avatar fight in the entire series. Korra’s blows get easily sidetracked by Kuvira, who almost wins the battle.
Varrick agrees to work on the spirit vines. Baatar Jr. forces Bolin to join Varrick as an assistant. Varrick makes a time bomb and threatens to blow up Baatar Jr. The bomb was built by Varrick to destroy the weaponry of the spirit vines. The fear of the bomb forces Baatar Jr. to set Varrick and Bolin free.
