When “The Last of Us” originally came out, many critics praised the game’s visuals and aesthetics, claiming it to be a masterpiece in this regard. Fans were also quite pleased with the way the game was designed, and all in all, Naughty Dog had an immediate huge hit on their hands.
There have been some talks of a sequel lately, but nothing is confirmed yet. Fans are getting more and more anxious, and the presence of certain rumors hasn’t made the situation easier for them either. But even if we don’t get a proper sequel anytime soon, it looks like fans will at least have a good reason to relive the original experience now.
“The Last of Us Remastered” is reportedly going to arrive to the PlayStation Pro, running at a native 4K resolution and keeping a stable 30 frames per second. For comparison, the game is currently rendered at 1080p, so this will be an enormous leap up.
Obviously, the new game is going to come with redone textures and models to match the higher resolution. It wouldn’t make much sense to show the same old textures in those beautiful large-scale dimensions, so the game’s artists must be hard at work right now.
We don’t know if this is a proper remaster – that is, done from scratch – or just a retexturing of the original game, but needless to say, many fans are hoping for the former. “The Last of Us” can still stun players with its visuals even today, but throwing a fresh coat of paint on the game can do wonders for its popularity and recognition.
This could also be a great precursor to the announcement of a sequel, if Naughty Dog are planning something like that. Activision seem to have a similar idea with their “Call of Duty” franchise recently, as they’re remastering the most iconic entry in the series to accompany the release of “Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare”.
Obviously this isn’t the case here, as the announcement of “The Last of Us 2” is still nowhere in sight. If Naughty Dog were indeed planning to pair the two games, it makes no sense for them to keep quiet about the sequel, which is what players would be more excited about.
Many gamers are skeptical to the possibility of changing the gameplay of the original for the remaster, claiming that it could ruin the game if it’s done too heavily. While there were some flaws with the design of “The Last of Us”, they were mostly minor, and some could even claim that they were part of the game’s charm.
Other reports about the game claim that it will also support a lower resolution, but at a higher framerate, practically guaranteeing a 60 FPS experience from start to finish. We don’t know what option players would lean towards, as having the game play smoothly is also quite important in a title like this. Perhaps it would be a good idea to finish it once in the 30 FPS mode, and then use the higher framerate for more complex achievements.
We also don’t know how much the game will cost, but it seems like many players would gladly pay full price for it, even those who already own the original “The Last of Us”. If the game offers enough new content in the form of textures and models to justify that, we can definitely see their point of view.
