Naughty Dog have been hard at work on multiple fronts lately, and the studio has been doing quite well in terms of pleasing their fans. Many people were pleased with the way “Uncharted 4” turned out, and now there is a lot of speculation over the studio’s next plans. Various rumors indicate that the next big project on their hands could be none other than “The Last of Us 2”, the sequel to one of the most iconic games in the industry.
When the original “The Last of Us” came out, it made quite the splash, and the game even managed to establish some new trends in the industry that are being followed to this day. However, while many people expected a sequel to follow shortly after, Naughty Dog went quiet on the issue and even showed that they’re focusing on their other titles for the time being.
Now that “Uncharted 4” is out though, there isn’t much else the developers could be working on, at least not on such a large scale. Many of their fans therefore assume that “The Last of Us 2” is at least the next project that they’re planning, if it’s not already underway.
What could the next game do to justify the expectations that fans have for it now? As we said above, the first game was very innovative and that was one of its major selling points. The developers took a unique approach to many of its elements, from the storytelling to the gameplay, and it all paid off in the end.
Some players complained that the game’s combat felt a bit too monotonous at times, partially due to the way the stealth elements worked. That could be a good starting point for Naughty Dog to consider in their changes for “The Last of Us 2”. On the other hand, focusing too much on the combat aspect could drag the game too far away from its origins.
There are also rumors that there may be more than two characters in the new game as well. However, it seems like this didn’t please many fans as a possibility, as part of the charm of the original “The Last of Us” came from the interactions between the two protagonists.
We’ve seen a successful implementation of more than two protagonists in “GTA 5” recently, but that game worked in a completely different way, so it doesn’t make much sense to compare the two. In the end though, if Naughty Dog want to expand the “cast” of “The Last of Us 2”, they should certainly know how to best go about this, and what the game truly needs.
The last we heard from the studio was that they will start working on the game once they’re done with the first DLC installment for “Uncharted 4”. However, some fans suspect that the studio is not being completely open about their intentions, and that they may actually already have some work in progress behind the scenes.
With that in mind, it would be reasonable to expect an announcement about it once the first “Uncharted 4” DLC is out, but that of course assumes that the developers have been working in secret and are farther along than they claim to be. This is more wishful thinking by their fans than anything else, which is why many are skeptical of the possibility.
