“The Last of Us” was without doubt a highly successful release, and one of the more interesting games to come out on the PlayStation 4. Many players and critics commended the title for its great approach to storytelling and its memorable setting and characters, and while the ending of the story drew some criticism and apparently left some players disappointed, the whole experience was considered very worthwhile by most.
So it’s no wonder that talks of a sequel started pretty much immediately after the first game came out, and players were eager to learn when they would get a chance to continue their journey through the game’s post-apocalyptic world – if ever. And while there were pretty much no news on that front until now, we finally got something that looks like it could be a solid lead.
One of the voice actors who worked on the original game, Nolan North, might have just leaked the title. In a recent talk with the press, North confirmed that he knows of a sequel currently in development, but he doesn’t think he’ll be coming back for it himself. His character had an “untimely demise” in the original, as he put it himself, and it’s true that David died and couldn’t possibly be coming back.
Of course, it’s a game and not a film – which means that they could still end up reusing the actor for another role, and he could even voice multiple characters in the new installment in the franchise. The actor is actually known for his ability to change his voice quite well, so we wouldn’t be surprised if we heard him in a different role in the new game.
It should be noted that this is not yet an official confirmation – Troy Baker, who voiced the game’s protagonist Joel, claims that he knows nothing of a sequel in the works. He was asked about the possibility directly, and said that he has no idea if the creators of the game are planning a new installment or not. He also added that he trusts them to tell a story that “needs to be told”.
Which means that if there is to be a sequel for the game, it will have a very specific purpose with its storytelling. It will not be just a random new game meant to satisfy the fans’ cravings for a sequel, and it will have a lot of thought put into it.
At least, that’s what we assume based on this statement, and knowing the dedication and hard work that went into creating the first game, we would expect it to be true. It’s not known if the game will get a sequel or not, but it’s pretty much a guarantee that if a sequel does arrive, it will be very finely crafted and come with lots of improvements to the basic formula.
And even though we’re yet to get an official confirmation for the new game, fans have already been going crazy discussing the different possibilities for the sequel online, and arguing about what it might include. There are certainly many different possible options for “The Last of Us 2”, not just in terms of storytelling but also gameplay, and we would expect the new game to really raise the bar. On the other hand, it should also address some issues that were commonly brought up with the first installment, as even though it was considered one of the best games to come out that year, it was not without its flaws.
