‘The Incredibles 2’ Gets a June 21, 2019 Playdate as Confirmed by Disney Pictures!

Contrary to the previous reports that the sequel to the 2004 animated superhero film “The Incredibles” will come out in June 2018, Disney Pictures has announced early last month that “The Incredibles 2” is already booked for a June 21, 2019 playdate.

When its subsidiary Marvel Studios calendared all its film releases from next year until 2020, it was actually culled from the complete list of movies that Disney pictures would be releasing from January 29, 2016 to November 2020.

The list has actually been posted by The Disney Movie Review and it contained 37 movies in all including the 14 previously-listed Marvel movies.

Among the upcoming Disney animated films with Pixar Studios, “Finding Dory” will come out first on June 17, 2016, followed by “Cars 3” on June 16, 2017, “Coco” on November 22, 2017, “Toy Story 4” on June 15, 2018, and finally “The Incredibles 2” on June 21, 2019.

The much-awaited “Frozen 2” was not on the list, but Disney left a window open when it included an unnamed Disney movie to come out during the second half of 2018.

By the time “The Incredibles 2” hit the theaters in 2019, 15 years would have passed since the original film came out on cinemas. That is actually even longer than the 12-year gap between “Monsters” and “Monsters University,” both of which are collaborations of Disney and Pixar, notes Slash Film.

Almost through with the script

Disney also confirmed the return of Director Brad Bird to helm the upcoming sequel of the 2004 box-office animated hit. Brad Bird also disclosed that he is about 75% through in writing the script for “The Incredibles 2.”

Bird stated that he has the story arc for “The Incredibles 2” and he has been trying to keep it focused like the first film, which was a little bit more about characters and relationships. The director said that they will take it from there, notes the Australia Network News.

It will be Bird’s first animated film since “Ratatouille” shown in 2007. He has spent the last years working on movies like “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” the fourth film of the franchise, and “Tomorrowland.”

In a previous interview, Bird said that despite the booming state of superhero movies based on comic books, “The Incredibles 2” will be different from the current crop because it will have one aspect that shall make it special and that is the element of family.

In the same interview, the writer and director also said that he just made a first pass through the script and that the production team was already boarding parts of it. He also disclosed that he has a lot of people who worked on the first movie, also working on the sequel and they are having a good time doing it at the moment.

A great story for the sequel

After the D23 Expo held in August in Anaheim, California, speculations on the release date of the “The Incredibles 2” started coming out as a result of the hint given by John Lasseter, head of Pixar Animation.

In an interview with reporters during the event, Lasseter confirmed that Brad Bird will return to direct “The Incredibles 2” and also revealed that the director has already found a great story for the sequel.

The Pixar chief said that now that Brad Bird has finished his work on “Tomorrowland,” he and the people from Pixar are already developing the story but he cannot say anything more beyond that.

Brad Bird also said previously that he does not want to disclose so many details about “The Incredibles 2” given the influx of superhero movies these days. He said that he does not want “The Incredibles 2” to be reduced into a footnote or commentary on the current state of the superhero genre.

During the recent premiere of his latest film for Disney pictures “Tomorrowland,” Director Bird talked about the upcoming sequel to “The Incredibles.”
