‘The Incredibles 2’ Director Brad Bird Admits it Took Him Quite Some Time to Come Up with a Good Story for the Sequel!

More than a decade after “The Incredibles” was released, the movie is finally getting a sequel. But fans are wondering why it took this long for the story of the superhero Parr family to continue.

The first film ended after Dash’s tournament and a new villain was in town causing destruction. The Parr family, with their alter ego The Supers have seemingly embraced their true identities as superheroes.

Writer and director Brad Bird recently admitted in an interview with Coming Soon that the conceptualization for the follow up to the 2004 film took him quite a long time despite the film ending on clear note that there would be more adventures for the Parr family.

As early as 2007, the writer was vocal with his intentions to produce a follow-up film given that the first film was a success, but it just didn’t materialize into the big screen. He was not able to come up with a film script then.

During the DVD launch of “Tomorrowland” recently, Bird mentioned that he had a lot of ideas that he wanted to incorporate in the superhero movie, ideas that he pitched for the first movie but could no longer fit.

During the same event, the director also shared his thoughts that these days, he thinks that the role of television and film had switched. Bird narrates that television nowadays is taking risks and films are settling. Hence, the challenge for his future films is to bring back what the movie industry could offer best, Bustle reports.

According to Ecumenical News, “The Incredibles” director wanted to come up with an over-arching idea that connected the first film to which he admits, he had a difficult time.

But all good things take time and right now, Bird has finally come up with the perfect storyline for Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and their children Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. Brad admits that he’s almost done with the script and that he’s got a great team who’s got their hands full with the film as well.

“The Incredibles 2” was confirmed earlier this year along with Pixar’s string of releases planned for the next two or three years. In April 2015, Bird confirmed that he has started working on the animated film’s screenplay.

Following that month, Bird confirmed that he will helm the sequel and that the superhero film will be his next directorial duty after “Tomorrowland.” The logo for the upcoming sequel was released at this year’s D23 Expo held in August.

Disney and Pixar are still mum on what the sequel will be about and with the plot under tight wraps, speculations surrounding the film are abuzz.

According to Movie News Guide, the film is expected to come out on November 16, 2016. Originally, it was pegged to be released sometime in 2017 or 2018, but since the movie is now in its early stages of production, a late 2016 release does sound possible. However, Disney has yet to confirm this.

As for the original cast members returning, Bird didn’t hand out a direct answer but he dropped a hint. The director says that as for the sequel, they’re trying to keep it focused on what the film was all about, its characters and their relationships.

There’s still no word if Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell and Spencer Fox will return to reprise their animated characters of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, and Dash, respectively.

Christian Post suggests that the story will feature more of Frozone, Edna Mode and the youngest of the Parr family, Jack-Jack.

Frozone, voiced by Samuel Jackson, has been a long-time family friend of the Parrs, having worked with Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl before they got married. The superhero, who goes by his ordinary persona of Lucius Best, has the ability to form ice from the humidity in the air.
