The Get Down Season 2 Awaiting a Green Signal, Will Be Set in The 80s, Is Baz Luhrmann Leaving?

Baz Luhrmann’s musical series The Get Down had a good run in its very first season. However, there is no confirmation on The Get Down Season 2.

The first season was critically acclaimed and much loved, but it didn’t get Netflix enough viewership. Season 1 of The Get Down could only garner 3.2 million viewers in the US whereas other Netflix shows like Orange is the New Black went ahead and raked in 15.56 million viewers.

Netflix is known to bring in new and exciting series to the viewers, and there was a lot of expectation from The Get Down. Baz Luhrmann is known for films like Moulin Rouge and Romeo Juliet. He wanted to depict a story based during the birth of the hip-hop movement.

Luhrmann is known for his impressive sets and attention to detail. Thanks to his precision and accurate depiction of the hip-hop era, the cost of production sky-rocketed and touched a minimum of $120 million. A budget of this proportion is unheard of when it comes to a series.

With so much spent in making The Get Down, it wasn’t acceptable to the producers that Season 1 wasn’t popular enough. There were series made with less than half the budget for The Get Down that went on to get top viewership.

With Jaden Smith playing the role of Dizzee, there was a lot of interest in The Get Down. Baz Luhrmann is a showman and viewers wanted to see him weave magic in the Netflix show. While the series started with the maximum number of viewers during the premiere of Season 1, it saw a huge drop by the end of the week.

Rumors suggest that Netflix might not want to continue with The Get Down Season 2. They never reveal the rating of their shows and hence there is no official word on the low TRP. The second half of The Get Down Season 1 will be back on Netflix in 2017.

Fans believe that Baz Luhrmann and his team are most likely to come back with The Get Down Season 2. They might already be brainstorming about the upcoming season. The first season focused on the emergence of hip-hop in South Bronx during the 1970s, and there are talks of a time jump to the 80s in Season 2.

Netflix might not have made any official comment on the possibility of a second season of The Get Down, but according to IndieWire, Baz Luhrmann is sure of Season 2. He said that fans should expect Season 2 of The Get Down.

Even writer-producer Nelson George informed Entertainment Weekly that for Season 2 of The Get Down, they are working on the idea of taking Ezekiel Figueroa (Justice Smith), Shaolin Fantastic (Shameik Moore) and Mylene Cruz (Herizen F. Guardiola) to the era of Michael Jackson and Prince.

The Get Down Season 2

George confirmed that the stories of the different characters are going to move according to their place in the story. The story of Ezekiel and Shaolin Fantastic will progress organically as they move into the 80s. Mylene’s story will deal with the end of the disco era and how it affects her whole life in The Get Down Season 2.

The writers are hopeful that they will be able to deliver a successful Season 2. The 80s was more popular and hence more viewers will be able to connect to the story depicted during that particular time.
