After the successful first season of “The Flash,” the production team is now preparing for its Season 2 with an exciting storyline and new villains who will battle the superhero.
During the 2015 San Diego ComicCon, Greg Berlanti, the executive producer, disclosed that the Flash will have to face a new villain in Zoom, who was also an original character from DC Comics. Barry Allen as the Flash, played by actor Grant Gustin, will be facing a new enemy that is much faster than Reverse-Flash, Showbiz & TV reported.
There were also reports that the Flash will also face another strong enemy named Atom Smasher. The villain was originally a hero at DC Comics and considered one of the strongest villains for Flash next season, according to Realty Today. Former WWE wrestler, Adam Copeland will play the role of Atom Smasher, and his main goal in going to Central City is to kill the Flash.
The showrunner disclosed that Atom Smasher has incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size. These capabilities will make the villain a match to Allen and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs Team will have to come together to find ways to defeat the strong villain.
In the comics, Atom Smasher is the alter ego of Al Rothstein and was a longtime hero. But the death of his mother made him darker. Rothstein was mentioned in Season 1 as among the victims of the particle accelerator explosion, creating Metahumans in the process. Allen also gained his powers at the time of the explosion.
Moreover, the “The Flash” panel at ComicCon 2015 discussed that the plot of Season 2 will happen a few months after the events of the last episode of Season 1. The characters will have to deal with the catastrophic events that happened in the season finale. Allen is going to struggle in a life full of tension and he will deal with the consequences of the heroic acts of Eddie, played by Rick Cosnett.
The season finale saw the S.T.A.R. Labs Team facing a conflict when they decided to let Flash travel back in time to save his mother and also fulfilling the request of Dr. Harrison Wells, played by Tom Cavanagh, his mentor who turned out to be the Reverse-Flash, Entertainment Weekly reported. Wells said to Allen that in the future, he and the Flash were locked in a never-ending conflict. Once he discovered Allen’s identity, he traveled back in time to kill Allen’s mother and implant trauma to the young Allen.
But Wells trained Allen to become the Flash so he could be fast enough to rupture the time barrier and create a stable wormhole that will help Wells to return home. Wells gave Allen a deal to travel back in time, which will also be an opportunity for Allen to save his mother. As Allen consulted his friends, Joe, played by Jesse Martine, advised him to return back in time and save his mother and make things right.
However, Henry, played by John Wesley Shipp, was against the plan because he believed that things happen for a reason. From Henry’s perspective, saving his mother and changing her fate might undo what has made Allen great. To Henry, Barry was always a hero and does not need to do some drastic things to prove it. But Barry did not listen to Henry and proceeded with his plan to save his mother.
Allen also asked Iris, portrayed by Candice Patton, and she said that he spends so much time worrying and caring about others and it is time for him to do what is right for himself. As Allen decided to say yes to the deal, the plan was to use the particle accelerator. Allen will run around the particle accelerator at which they will inject a hydrogen particle to collide with him, which will result to punching a hole in the fabric of reality.
