Even though “The Elder Scrolls 6” is not coming anytime soon, fans of the franchise got some great consolation when Bethesda announced that they’ve been working on a remaster of “Skyrim”, the last installment. There’s been a lot of talk about the new game lately, and recent talks of possible modding support on consoles have made fans even more interested.
This will apparently apply not only to the new remastered version of the game, but the original as well. The rumors are a bit unclear on the details right now, but it’s implied that those who own the original “Skyrim” on the PlayStation 4 will get the opportunity to mod the game as well.
Meanwhile, Bethesda have released the system requirements for the remaster on the PC, and they look pretty reasonable. One of the more notable specs is the 8 GB of RAM requirement, but considering how much content the game will feature, this is understandable. We only hope that the studio will be able to optimize it properly for consoles, as this is not a small memory footprint at all.
Bethesda have also been talking about modding support for “Fallout 4” on consoles once the remastered edition of “Skyrim” arrives, and it looks like they’re going to give their fans an overall great treatment in the coming months.
Some have been a bit more skeptical about the situation, claiming that the recent trend of remastering classic games is a harmful one to the industry as a whole. Their argument is that it makes studios lazy and uninspired, preventing them from pushing their franchises forward in any real way.
But still, there is clearly a lot of interest in a remake of “Skyrim”, just like there was when Activision announced that they’re remastering “Call of Duty 4”. Many gamers who’ve played those games when they originally came out would like to re-experience them with a fresh coat of paint, and there’s certainly no harm in allowing them to do that.
It benefits the studios themselves in the end, and allows them to secure even more funding for their next projects. This should hopefully result in an even better “The Elder Scrolls 6”, whenever that game is ready to be announced. According to some recent rumors, it might not be soon at all, but in light of the current situation, fans don’t seem to really mind.
One thing that some fans have been speaking in a cautious voice about is the technical quality of the new game. Bethesda are notorious for releasing titles littered with bugs and relying on patches and community support to fix them. Considering that they’re not making an entirely new game, but remaking an old one, they will not have much of an excuse this time, so they should definitely be careful with the quality control of the remaster.
A public beta might not be a bad idea at all, even though it might be a bit strange for a single player game. We’ve already seen other developers attempt that in the past and enjoying success with it, so who knows.
There also seems to be some controversy among fans on the topic of the game’s balance. Some claim that Bethesda should treat it as part of remastering the game, and they should fix some of the issues that came up over the years and were never addressed through patches. On the other hand, there are some with a more “purist” approach to the situation, claiming that the studio should preserve as much as they can from the original.
