Many fans of “The Elder Scrolls” have been waiting for years to hear any news at all about a sequel. It’s been a while since “Skyrim” came out, and while there have been various rumors about a possible “The Elder Scrolls 6”, nothing official has been said so far. The rumors got particularly strong in the last few weeks, but in the end it turned out that they were actually leading up to something slightly different.
Bethesda announced that they’ve been working on a remastered edition of “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim”, and it’s coming out soon. And while that’s great news for those who want to revisit the latest entry in the franchise with better graphics and smoother gameplay, those who want to see the series move forward were left disappointed by the announcement.
In the end, it means that “The Elder Scrolls 6” is definitely not coming anytime soon. The studio has obviously been putting a lot of effort into the development of the remaster of “Skyrim”, so it’s not likely that they have done anything significant for the actual sequel.
At the same time, it wouldn’t make much sense for them to announce “The Elder Scrolls 6” so shortly after they revealed the remaster of “Skyrim”. While the two games can definitely be sold together, and they would actually work very well as a bundle, they should have been announced at the same time for that to work out properly.
Activision have the right idea with their “Call of Duty” franchise, and currently there seems to be even more attention on the remaster of “Call of Duty 4” than the actual latest release in the franchise, “Infinite Warfare”. Considering that the remaster requires the purchase of “Infinite Warfare”, it will be interesting to see how things play out for fans of the franchise.
Still, is it possible that Bethesda have not put any work at all into “The Elder Scrolls 6”? The studio did bring out “Fallout 4” last year, and that was a huge release for them which had obviously required a lot of work.
At the same time, it’s highly unlikely that they’ve been working on the remaster of “Skyrim” in all those years since the original game came out, so many fans are still questioning what exactly the studio’s been doing all this time.
It would be reasonable to assume that they actually have been working on a sequel, but it’s just too far from a presentable state at this moment. This would definitely make sense in light of Bethesda’s typical style of work, as they tend to be very secretive about their projects until they’re absolutely sure that they’re ready to show them to the world.
After so much time, fans will definitely expect the series to move forward in a significant way though, and the longer Bethesda delay “The Elder Scrolls 6”, the higher expectations they’ll have to live up to. It’s a common problem in the industry, and we’ve seen it hitting some specific developers quite hard in recent years too.
It’s still important that Bethesda take their time and ensure that the release marks a significant progress for the franchise though. The industry as a whole has seen some interesting trends lately, and Bethesda should try to implement as much as they can from recent popular titles. This includes their own, too.
