For those who have read Veronica Roth’s ‘Divergent’ book novel series know that Tris and Four do not get the dystopian happy ending fans rave for them to have.
That being said, fans are hoping that the movie version won’t see Tris’ demise and Four’s lonesome life ahead of him.
The third book, “Allegiant” has been slated for a two-part screening. The first part carries the title of the same name while the last part was renamed into “The Divergent Series: Ascendant.”
Speculations that an alternate ending for the hit YA franchise is in the works have been abuzz since the first film. Fans even went as far as initiating a petition on change.org wanting to change the film’s ending.
Reports say that substantial changes are in order in “Allegiant” that will allow room for Tris not to die by “Ascendant” and she and Four will remain together in the end.
However, Roth has long stated that the two-part finale will play by the book’s plot. This has also been backed up by Lionsgate as well as movie leads Shailene Woodley and Theo James who plays Tris and Four.
While the last two films are likely to stay true to its source material, rumors are surfacing that the alternate ending for the franchise may be used as the platform for possible future spin-offs.
According to Movie News Guide, Tris and Four could get their happy ending if the alternate ending would result into a spin-off about the continuation of their story in an alternate universe.
The idea seems a bit of a stretch considering that the final installment to the franchise would be out by 2017 and a spin-off is not a plausible idea as of the moment, but die-hard fans are unstoppable when it comes to Tris and Four’s well-deserved ending.
Sugar Scape reports that fans were given hope for an alternate ending when James had teased it during an interview during the early stages of “Insurgent.”
Theo James said that in the alternate ending, Tris gets to live by the franchise’s end and that they’ll even have twins named Bertie and Bernadette by the fourth film. Of course, the 31-year-old actor was obviously joking when he said such.
Further fueling things towards a new ending, the film’s official tagline is ‘Break the Boundaries of your World,’ while the tagline of “Ascendant” says ‘The End is Never What You Expect’ which gives out a strong hint about Tris’ fate.
In a more recent interview, the “Golden Boy” star stated that the last two films will carry some changes, but those changes will be minor and that the film will still follow the book’s direction.
Woodley has long stated that when she read the last book, she thought that the ending fit Tris very well. The 23-year-old actress says that Roth’s choice of ending sends out a powerful message.
The “Fault in our Stars” actress adds that the ending is what sets the “Divergent” trilogy apart from all the other young adult films out there.
In her interview with MTV News, Roth, for her part, confirms that the last two films will carry some slight changes, but fans have to wait for two more months to know up to what extent these changes might be.

The 27-year-old author admitted that she had considered writing an alternate ending whilst creating the novel, but that couldn’t be possible.
Roth admits that she thought about other options where Tris might go, but the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she’s not giving justice to Tris’ character and her story.
Roth believes that the journey and the transformation that Tris went through in the “Divergent” trilogy earned her a more powerful ending than what fans want the ending to be.
