While the first two seasons of the American crime drama TV series “The Blacklist” is already considered dark, Season 3 is expected to turn even darker following the developments in the Season 2 finale.
Set to return to NBC on September 24, “The Blacklist” will feature considerably bleaker outlook as Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Keen, played by Megan Boone, no longer works within the law, cites the Latin Post.
Keen disappeared with Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington, played by James Spader, at the end of the second season.
During an interview in May, Megan Boone actually said that when “The Blacklist” comes back in September, it is going to be the same characters but altogether a different show and a different dynamic. And that is because Liz Keen became a fugitive and her rights and privileges as an FBI profiler revoked.
First episode synopsis
Based on the synopsis of the first episode of Season 3, titled “The Troll Farmer,” a desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster.
With no clear protagonist to start Season 3, the heroic actions of the new character are quite timely because someone really needs to pick up the good guy slack in “The Blacklist.”
As she is now on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, Liz is actually embracing the unknown. But Megan Boone is not at all worried about the shift in her character’s dynamics and focus in the show’s Season 3.
She believes that whatever the shake-up to the series will be, the new darker action is where the show needs to go. While she understands that the show needs to have some sort of formula for its 22 episodes for every season, Season 3 certainly breaks open a lot of the structure of the show for a good purpose.
Throwing everything up in the air
For his part, veteran actor James Spader said that Season 3 of “The Blacklist” sort of throws all the pieces up in the air, while accompanying his statement with a laugh.
He also added that Season 3 could conceivably start the same day as the end of Season 2.
Showrunner Jon Bonkenkamp explained that the storyline for the third season of “The Blacklist” opens and takes fans into a new chapter where Liz is no longer just an FBI agent. He said that Liz and Red will take fans to a real journey that they have to go through to make the truth comes out in the end.
Bonkenkamp also added that the events that transpired in Season 2 left Liz’s line of good and bad to become blurred and also hardened her ways. It also made her more jaded and careful and really more like Red in a lot of ways, details iDigital Times.
Based also on early leaks, the second episode of “The Blacklist” Season 3 is titled “Marvin Girard,” which hints that the series will maintain its regular procedural format of searching for a different Blacklister every episode.
However, that may be the surprise that the show is planning to unravel especially now that the storyline already involves Liz as a fugitive.
Bokenkamp also explained that they have blown up the format of “The Blacklist.” He said it is no longer like Red sitting down on a park bench with Liz and says his usual line that goes: ‘Here’s the Blacklister that I want you to go catch.
Bokenkamp assured fans that it will no longer be the format of the show when it returns to the small screens on September 24. Both Red and Liz are on the run as they are already fugitives from the law.
As to how long will they be running, particularly Liz as a former FBI profiler, there is still no details about it. But since they are the protagonists of the crime drama TV series, it is expected that the truth will eventually be known in Season 3 and both Liz and Red will return to the fold of the law.
Have heard that there are to be hints of a criminal past for Liz ie Madaline Pratt. As I remember the Boyfriends name was Frank though I guess that was not his real name. This time instead of skirting around the edges how about why she left High School in the first place? Please do not say first love or a desperate need for love. Some will feed into that and some will say “She sure can pick them only not in those terms. Was she being bullied and reacted to it? Or something worse? Although we have to consider that any teacher who decided to touch Lizzie (Was he Frank?) would not have lived very long. Given that Liz was top in her class re profiling I would think that form of intuition would help her and Red much more than any criminal activity. Just be fair to that girl. I like Red Liz but do not belong to any of those assorted groups. I am a bit of a conspiracy nut but not as bad as some. I am also sensitive to a number of favorite characters on the Blacklist. After all Liz and Red go through I hope She ends up with someone falling for her because of who she then not because she once showed them love.
