During the Season 2 finale of the American crime drama TV series “The Blacklist” on NBC, FBI profiler Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Keen, played by Megan Boone, became a fugitive from the law after shooting and killing Attorney General Tom Connolly, played by Reed Birney, when she discovered that he is a member of the criminal organization known as the Cabal.
Season 3 of “The Blacklist” premiered on October 1 and it went off to a rousing start with a streamlined and engaging storytelling as Liz and Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington, played by James Spader, go on the run.
But after the fast-paced three episodes, the TV series has gone back to its familiar routine of highlighting the villains in the main plotlines in the fourth episode, even as Red and Liz continue to focus on their objective of having Liz exonerated from her supposed crime.
During the fourth episode which aired on October 22 titled “The Djinn,” Red and Liz continue with their mission to clear Liz’s name. They enlist the help of the task force to help them locate a woman called the Djinn, a mysterious woman who fulfils revenge fantasies, notes the International Business Times of UK.
The duo believes that the Djinn will also help them lead to the Cabal, which would be the key to exonerating Liz from the crime. The excitement of it all is that Agent Ressler, played by Diego Klattenhoff, and the FBI, are still on their tail to nail them down.
Given his gung-ho approach, Ressler is going to great lengths just to catch the two fugitives, even if it means putting others in danger.
Meeting the Djinn
It seems that Red has been able to meet the Djinn previously as part of the Blacklist because he described her to Liz as somebody who can make fantasies come true including greed, lust, and revenge.
Eventually, the episode showed Liz finally meeting the Djinn and the mysterious woman asked her what she deeply desire. Liz then told her that she wants the people who set her up to pay for what they have done.
The fourth episode of “The Blacklist” fulfils the basic requirements of the TV series and also come up with a mysterious means to culminate the subplot where Red and Liz just seem to be going around on circles with their efforts to track down the Cabal.
There was really nothing significant that transpired during the hour and it just seems that the show was doing a stalling tactic until the writers come up with something big for the next episodes of “The Blacklist,” details Screen Rant.
Focus on the relationship of the protagonists
During the first two seasons of “The Blacklist,” the series spend the better part by teasing Red’s connection with Liz which created a false sense of tension.
There were even reports prior to the Season 3 premiere that the third season will finally unravel the true relationship between Red and Liz that led fans to speculate wildly about it.
With Liz and Red on the run, the first two episodes of Season 3 focused on the duo’s attempt to evade capture and find some form of bargaining chip with the Cabal.
But the fourth episode really slipped up because it just had too many plot threads competing for time. Had it not for the simple, streamlined storytelling, the plot would not have progressed well.
In an interview before the Season 3 premiere, Megan Boone was quoted as saying that she thinks fans of the TV series already know how much Red loves Liz, but it is a confusing kind of love. She added that it will have to be answered because no matter how one love someone that deeply or under what mysterious circumstances may it be, it has to be known eventually.
