Writers of CBS’s Emmy-Award winning sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” were kind enough to satisfy fans’ curiosity during the show’s “Inside The Big Bang Theory Writers’ Room” panel at the San Diego ComicCon that took place in California over the weekend.
On July 10, Bazinga fans were in a frenzy after finding out details about the show’s upcoming Season 9 including what’s in store for Amy and Sheldon’s relationship, Penny’s possible family history exposure, and the future of Raj’s relationship with his girlfriend.
Writer and executive producer Steve Molaro disclosed what’s in store for the show’s favorite onscreen couple Sheldon and Amy, better known collectively as ‘Shamy.’ In the series finale of Season 8, fans were left with a heartbreak as they witnessed the neurologist impulsively breaking things off with Mr. Cooper over a video call, after five solid years of dating. But in a shocking twist, it turns out that Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, was ready to take their relationship to the next level as he was about to propose and bring out an engagement ring.
Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy Farrah Fowler, made a special appearance along with Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj Koothrapili in the series, during the show’s panel at ComicCon. Nayyar admits even cast members are still in the dark about what’s to come in the show’s upcoming season, particularly the relationships of Sheldon and Amy, as well as that of Penny and Leonard, adding that they usually receive the script for a particular episode the night before filming.
Bialik confirms this by saying that the only thing they know about the first episode of Season 9 is it picks up just a few moments after Season 8’s cliffhanger. The 39-year old actress admits she too was shocked when she first read about Sheldon’s ring for her character during last season’s series finale. But in a report from Realty Today, Bialik hinted that the ring might not be an engagement ring since Sheldon’s character is very unpredictable. She jokingly adds that only Gollum knows the truth behind the ring, a pun to Sheldon’s funny scene during the series finale of Season 8 where he was shown talking to the Gollum figurine while showing the ring he was about to give to Amy in proposing.
Eric Caplan, one of the writers for the show, also spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Amy’s character getting a backstory, saying that she has an interesting background worth exploring and looked into in the upcoming episodes of Season 9.
During the show’s panel, a fan asked if viewers will get to know when exactly Sheldon bought the ring, to which Molaro gamely replied that the story about the jewelry will be answered during the Season 9 premiere. Molaro also talked about the pair’s relationship detailing Sheldon is very fond of Amy and that their relationship is definitely far from over. This seems to be the case as Hollywood Reporter reported that the deal for the show’s 10th season has already been sealed with all series regulars returning, although no further detail is being released.
Meanwhile, one of the show’s recurring mystery is Kaley Cuoco’s character Penny’s surname, to which diehard fans may finally have an answer this season. In a report from the Inquisitr, the outlet speculates that Penny’s relationship with her paternal roots may very well become a plot that will be weaved into the show in the upcoming Season 9.
Earlier reports saying Penny’s last name is Barrington have been circling, a rumor which show creator Chuck Lorre confirmed to be a fact recently. This confirmation fueled rumors that Penny’s biological father might make an appearance on Season 9 although writers and producers of the show are not saying anything at all on such possibility.
The Vine Report details more of Penny’s relationship with Leonard, played by Johnny Galecki after they decided to pursue their plan to marry in Las Vegas. Although their planned marriage might face some problems after Leonard confessed to Penny that she kissed another girl during the series finale of Season 8.
