There will be no pulling the rug from underneath the viewers on the wedding of Penny and Leonard in the long-running American TV sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” when Season 9 premieres on CBS on September 21.
Showrunner Steve Molaro confirmed, through several advanced photos of the ninth season of the popular TV series, that Penny and Leonard have indeed tied the knot despite keeping viewers in suspense during the Season 8 finale whether the couple pushed through with the wedding or not in Las Vegas.
Penny’s apprehension about getting married was a result of Leonard’s revelation, minutes before they decided to tie the knot, about kissing a certain girl some two years ago. Unfortunately, the same girl whose name is Mandy, played by Melissa Tang, will actually show up in Season 9, making their marriage sail through a major challenge right at the onset.
It is quite unusual for showrunners to make a big reveal on an upcoming show because it takes the sting out of the series and removes the so-called element of surprise.
However, Molaro says that they have decided to tease the wedding of Penny and Leonard because there are more to Season 9 of “The Big Bang Theory” than such plot and that the more exciting storyline will come after their wedding, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
Molaro disclosed that he and Chuck Lorre, who is also a showrunner along with Bill Prady, had discussed about revealing the wedding of Penny and Leonard before the season premiere but he thought that it would just give fans the notion that the wedding did not push through.
He said that it was not the message that they wanted to impart to viewers because they do not want fans to feel shortchanged later with the tease because there is just so much more story beyond the wedding of the couple. And that’s when they both agreed to tell everyone that Penny and Leonard did tie the knot and it’s official.
The impact of the marriage on their friends
Molaro said that the story will continue after the marriage between Penny and Leonard happens. Their marriage would certainly have a big impact on their friends, particularly on Sheldon, who is going through a rough patch after being spurned by Amy, minutes before proposing, or so it seems, details Cinema Blend.
It would also not be smooth sailing for the new marriage of the couple after Penny just learned that Leonard kissed another woman during his North Sea expedition two years ago.
Based on the photos that were released, it seems that Penny and Leonard also had some awkward moments on their honeymoon night right after the wedding. It would be interesting to see how everything plays out especially with the revelations from Leonard and also considering their on-again, off-again relationship over the past couple of seasons of the show.
‘Star Wars’ fanatics
“The Big Bang Theory” is clearly a fan of the epic space opera franchise. In the past, the show has featured a number of “Star Wars” cameos including one episode in Season 7 that starred actors James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher, who everybody knows, is Princess Leia in the franchise.
It is also expected that Season 9 will also focus on the not-so-good relationship of Amy and Sheldon after they seem to have broken up during the Season 8 finale.
In addition to a great amount of focus on the relationship between Amy and Sheldon, reports also indicated that Season 9 shall also focus on the back story of Amy Farrah Fowler in order for fans to know who she really is and why she acts indifferent to some people occasionally including her erstwhile boyfriend Sheldon.
