Now that finally the inevitable ‘I love you’ is out-of-the-box, The Big Bang Theory cannot put it back. A Christmas episode is one where a certain amount of sentimentality is always allowed and welcome at the same time. The warm hearty glow of the growing romance between Sheldon and Amy in this is important to the show’s DNA. It left a strong little lasting memory in the minds of the viewers.
The Big Bang Theory does well during the Holiday episodes when there are a lot of emotions, sadness and family bonding involved during Christmas. In the past holidays, we saw Penny and the four guys making the most of their little crude unit but now the friendship has evolved into a suitable little family. It’s not at all odd that none of the members of this family wish to be elsewhere during Christmas Eve.
As a result, we have our Amy planning a Victorian-themed party for the members along with Raj’s father. At the same time, Howard and Leonard try to overcome an accident at work while Sheldon takes Bernadette to the mall in order to choose the best gift for Amy. The first storyline works as a framing device which serves as something for the members to get back to.
However, the actual exchanges between Amy, Raj and Raj’s father seem rather unremarkable and seemingly disagreeable. Raj dealing with his parents’ divorce has a lot of angles to it but presently it just serves as an awkward side note while he deals with Leonard and Howard’s bickering at the lab.
Amy’s excitement regarding her Victorian-themed Christmas party for the group is rather endearing in nature. At the same time, the food and drinks she worked on, serves greatly with the Christmas Party. In the meantime, Raj’s mention regarding the Tom Hanks-giving was quite tantalizing to provide us with a flashback.
On the other hand, the alternative plot regarding the Howard/Leonard/Raj trio accidentally introducing a pigeon in the contaminated lab was rather weak. Watching them bickering amidst mild jokes is something we have seen a million times. For an episode this sweet, the entire setting appeared rather irrelevant.
Following the prom episode, the freedom of the writers regarding Amy and Sheldon’s love affair was greatly proved with this holiday episode. Sheldon and Amy is now a legitimate couple like Howard/Bernadette and Leonard/Penny. With all of this, comes little cute moments when Sheldon recalls all that he enjoyed about Amy and how making each other happy is as good as it gets during Christmas.
The Big Bang theory doesn’t usually involve too much of emotions without a little joke. However, in this Holiday episode, it was non-existent, which made the relationship between the characters appear quite natural and pleasing.
