Teeth Whitening Using Charcoal Mixture May Lead to Enamel Deterioration and Teeth Erosion, Say Dentists!

People who want a quick fix to their teeth whitening problems have to be very careful with methodologies that they just find on the internet.

There is now a growing trend on the internet featuring a do-it-yourself teeth whitening methodology that utilizes a black mixture derived from charcoal and smearing it on the teeth before brushing and washing it entirely.

The procedure became an online sensation just this month when a YouTube user named Mama Natural posted a video showing the execution of teeth whitening using the charcoal mixture. The video has since amassed over 1.5 million views on YouTube and it is likely that a portion of those who have seen the video may have already tried the methodology, reports Fox News Health.

Professional dentists have recently come out to say that the methodology is not safe for users. They explained that the method may lead to enamel deterioration and tooth erosion.

Showing how to use charcoal mixture for teeth whitening

In the trending YouTube video, host Genevieve is shown brushing her teeth with the charcoal mixture supplement for three to five minutes before rinsing and stating thereafter that she had seemingly whiter teeth.

She then tells the camera that the product she used can be purchased in capsule form in health food stores or even online.

Genevieve explained that the stuff is highly absorbent, describing it even as one of the most absorbent materials on the planet. She added that hospitals have the stuff on hand in case someone comes in with a poisoning because it can absorb the stuff and safely remove it from the body.

Michigan-based dentist Dr. Susan Maples explained, however, that there is not enough evidence available to know whether the supplement is beneficial to a person that it may actually be dangerous.

She said that she worry about the long-term effects of the YouTube demo video, adding that teeth are the only part of the ectoderm that does not replenish or heal itself because once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Dr. Maples cited that when a person loses the enamel, his teeth get sensitive and darker in color because he is close to the part of the tooth that has the depth of the color. But since teeth can’t be grown back the only thing that a person can do is cover it up with restoration.

She cited that her fear with using the charcoal mixture to whiten one’s teeth is that people will do it periodically just to do it. Over time, she said, that they would then see too much erosion on their teeth.

The importance of dentist supervision

While teeth whitening can now be done by oneself because of the availability of do-it-yourself kits or products, it is still best to have a dental professional supervise the whole procedure, notes [easyazon_link identifier=”B001OOLLVS” locale=”US” tag=”masterherald-20″]Best Whitening Strips Review[/easyazon_link].

As simple and hazard-less as it may seem, regular usage of teeth whitening products can have adverse consequences, especially if not used in a limited and restricted way.

The oral hygiene of human beings is something that can be permanently altered if harsh chemicals are used on gums and teeth and it can also cause damage to the internal organs if they pass into one’s mount.

It is very important therefore that a regulated usage of teeth cleaning gels and solutions is practiced by do-it-yourself teeth whitening advocates.

There is still no substitute to avoiding excessive consumption of food items that contribute to the discoloration of one’s teeth including coffee, wine, or other liquor. Reduction of tobacco consumption or smoking cigarettes is also advised as this damage the enamel of the teeth.

Two other important factors of oral health care are regular rinsing and cleaning of one’s teeth which should complement the practice of brushing at least twice a day.

Because of the development of modern science and medicines, self-healing and self-medication have become a good option to most people, especially to not-so-serious treatments or only involves oral or topical medication.
