Since Dylan O’Brien’s accident on the set of “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” rumors have been swirling that the actor will no longer be a part of the upcoming sixth season of “Teen Wolf.”
Luckily, showrunner Jeff Davis finally spoke up about the issue. Speaking to Creative 132, Davis reveals that they won’t be replacing O’Brien, who plays Stiles Stilinski on the MTV TV series.
Davis adds that Stiles won’t be dying in Season 6. He says that Dylan will be back to film soon for “Teen Wolf” but he can’t do any stunts.
The executive producer says that they are talking to Wes Ball, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” director and they hope to get O’Brien back on “Teen Wolf” to film as soon as possible.
Davis adds that Dylan already insists on filming even though he’s still recuperating from his injury. The 24-year-old actor was injured on the set last March while filming the third installment of “The Maze Runner” film series.
A WorkSafeBC report revealed that “The Internship” actor was injured while filming a stunt scene where he had to transport himself from one moving vehicle to another vehicle in motion.
His injuries were initially reported to be substantial but not life-threatening. A month later, it was revealed that his injuries were serious and worse than initially thought. This meant that he needed more time to recover.
Davis says that if O’Brien could return to the set soon, then he could be in the third episode. He admits that there’s a possibility that Stiles might not be present for the third episode of Season 6.
Also, Jeff says that if Wes decides not to risk anything until Dylan has fully recovered, then it might mean Dylan will be absent in more than one episode in Season 6.
Before leaving to film for “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” the “First Time” actor was able to film the “Teen Wolf” Season 6 premiere episode and possibly the second episode.
The showrunner earlier stated that O’Brien’s character will be an integral focus of the season premiere along with Holland Roden’s Lydia. It is also expected that the character will have to make a choice between Lydia and Shelley Hennig’s Malia.
Production for “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” has been suspended indefinitely for O’Brien’s recuperation. Fox has issued a statement saying that they prioritize the actor’s safety above else hence their decision to resume principal photography when Dylan has fully recovered from his injuries.
Filming for “Teen Wolf,” however, is still underway, and has not been delayed despite Dylan’s condition, implying his screen time this season could be lesser than previous ones.
Davis’ recent interview also clears up rumors that Dylan is exiting the series to focus on his film career.
“The Maze Runner” actor will star alongside Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming biographical disaster thriller-drama “Deepwater Horizon.” He is also in talks to play Mitch Rapp in the adaptation of “American Assassin.”
The actor was able to make time to film “Teen Wolf” in between the production of “The Maze Runner” and its sequel “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
Davis recalls O’Brien’s earlier statement saying that as long as there’s “Teen Wolf,” he will continue to play Stiles. Tyler Posey, who plays Scott McCall, has also expressed the same thing with fans of the show.
Arden Cho, who plays Kira Yukimura, has already announced that she won’t be returning for the show’s sixth season.
Cho made her announcement through her YouTube page. She cites that in a show where there are plenty of characters, it gets difficult to insert essential storylines for some characters.
Davis also took the time to clear rumors saying One Direction member Harry Styles has been cast in the show as a replacement for O’Brien’s character.
