Daphne lives with her single mother Regina and grandmother Adriana in the low-income neighborhood of East Riverside, Missouri. Daphne is also deaf, having lost her hearing as a result of contracting meningitis at the age of three.
The Kennishes eventually invited Daphne and Regina to their home, and after learning that Regina is struggling financially, propose to move them into their guest house with Adriana. Regina accepted it.
The set-up enabled Bay and Daphne to understand their differences and embraced their similarities. They also struggled sometimes with their identities like when Bay discovered that she has inherited her artistic talent from Regina and Daphne realized that she has inherited John’s athletic skills and Kathryn’s love of cooking.
Kathryn and Regina also learned to bond with their biological daughters, while often unintentionally angering their legal ones. John has also learned to relate to Daphne by coaching her deaf school’s basketball team and employing her in the office of one of the local chain of car washes that he owns.
Bay also went on to look for her biological father Angelo Sorrento, who left Regina after Daphne went deaf. The search caused a bond between her and Emmett that later blossomed into romance.
